Multiple columns in layout
-
With the number of artciles increasing daily on my blog, I was wondering if there is a layout where we can present at least nine (or more) articles at one go, with one sidebar remaining on the left hand column i.e. only a small portion of the original is shown in each of the nine box. Readers need to click on (more) ro read the full article. This presentation is bound to be a favourite for those who have many articles in their blog.

Have you checked out DePo Masthead? It has 3 columns with the widgets at the bottom. There’s also Fjords04, which has 4 columns. You may have to tweak these themes to get what you want.

That site uses a magazine style theme and the only one even remotely close here at wordpress.COM is DePo Masthead.
We all have a lot of posts on our blogs. I’ve got nearly 3,000! To do what you want to do is fairly simple, though. Just use the more tag. Take a look at the FAQ on it.
And don’t leave your email address in the forums. It is a spam catcher. Mods, please delete

I already have tags but what I want is for the readers to take a look at latest 9-12 articles at one glance and then decide which interests them most so that they can click to read further. You can’t do that with tags.
-
Vivianpaige meant the “more tag” which isn’t really a “tag”. You should look at the FAQ on it.
Also, you could use toe “recent posts” widget, if you want recent posts to be on your sidebar. From memory, I think it goes up to the most recent 15 posts, but as I don’t use it, I’m not completely sure.
-
I am already using “more tag” but it is still does not have the same effect. You see we have pictures next to the articles and that takes up space. If you look at dandavats.com, their pictures are small on the main page and when you click on the article, it shows the full blown article as well as the full blown picture. Also you can pick any part of the article to be printed on the main page, not just the starting of the article.
-
– As lizii points out, what you’re looking for is actually served by the Recent Posts widget.
– If your problem is just the pictures, you can write a very short summary as the beginning of each post and use the more tag immediately after it – BEFORE the pictures or anything. You can even put the more tag as the beginning of each post, so you end up with titles only in your front page.
– There’s also the “Excerpt” function (Post editor > Advanced Options) in which you can paste “any part of the article” or write a summary. Unfortunatetly that only works with some themes; you can try it and see if it does with yours.
– If you want thumbnails as post excerpts, that’s also possible.
-
-
I’m afraid there’s no other way than testing the themes one by one. You can write such an excerpt in your latest post, save it, then preview the themes in Design>Themes. (I tried that for the first page of themes, and the only theme that would display the excerpt was Blix.)
-
TQ, the tags should include “excerpt” to help us in search
I tried this but the thumbnails also appear in the main article. How do I make it appear only in the <!–more area?

I can’t figure this out:
I am using the Rubrik theme and I tested it on a test blog for excerpts and it works fine. The I copied the excerpt and placed it im my live blog but the excerpt is not displayed in the main page like that shown in my test blog.
This is the excerpt:
BY JEYANTHY PILLAI<img class=”size-thumbnail wp-image-538 alignleft” style=”margin:5px;” title=”damodara-2008-detail-iskcon-kl” src=”http://iskconkl.wordpress.com/files/2008/11/damodara-2008-detail-iskcon-kl.jpg?w=128″ alt=”damodara-2008-detail-iskcon-kl” width=”128″ height=”94″ /> It promises a day of colour and fun in Teluk Pulai where a small chariot will be pulled from their centre to Taman Melawis, accompanied by a colourful children singing, chanting and dancing
-
I finally figured why it didn’t work. The excerpts just don’t work with the Rubrik theme!
The reason why I managed to see it in my test blog was because of the codes embedded in the “more tags” in the main article. So I only have one more thing to figure out, if someone can please help me. How to embed the thumbnails without it showing up when readers read the entire article?
-
You don’t want people who read the entire article to see your pictures? Could you clarify that?
-
I just want them to see the bigger photo instead of the thumbnail when they read the article without having to click on the thumbnail.
-
My articles already have the medium sized pictures. I just want to create the teasers in the main page now.
