Multiple copies of same pic in media file?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m wondering why I have multiple copies of the same picture in my media files when I only uploaded it once? This seems to be a waste of my limited space and makes finding images tedious. I’ve tried deleting just one of the duplicates and at first all seems well, but if I sign out and sign back in the image in the post is gone alltogether as is the duplicate in the media files. Is there something I’m missing?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Did you import content including images into your blog?

I think I understand your question and see where you might be going… yes, for some time now I have used Live Writer to write and edit my blog and I generally add images to those posts before uploading to WP… I’ll have to double check the older posts pre-LW and see if those images are doubled as well. Is there any way to avoid this problem?

I’ve experienced the same sort of problem… Importing my Blog took my Media Library of 1714 files and somehow multiplied them to 8942.

Gakkkk! I’m not certain what happened either, but I’d like to know how to simply empty the Library completely if it’s possible and re-import just single copies of the files.

    @mistressneko
You need to report your import issue to Staff and ask for their help. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

I’ll give that a try. Although I hate to bother anybody if there’s a simple fix for it.

  • Unknown's avatar

There is no simple fix. I exported and imported content from a wordpress.org install which was being domain mapped back into a wordpress.com blog in March. I had duplicated images, duplicated categories, image links that did not redirect correctly, etc.

At present I have no search access to 1000 images that were uploaded into the install as they are not searchable in my Media Library. They are all there but all the links to them in the posts are all broken. You do need Staff help.

  • Unknown's avatar

Damn…. I was hoping that wasn’t the case.

I’m missing all my Category and tags for each post too. From what I’ve been reading that looks annoying to fix too given my Blog is 4 years old and chock filled with posts. Sigh…..

I hear you but what more can I say other than remain positively focused and go to Staff as it is your only recourse?

  • Unknown's avatar

Put in an email on this but haven’t heard back yet….

Kind of holding off on posting any new stuff till I find out if the Media Library will need to be flushed and re-imported. Sigh…..

  • Unknown's avatar

Still nothing back yet…. Made a second support email with more detailed info.

    Hoping for some info…..

    @mistressneko
Staff are extremely busy so if you have not received an email from them all I can say is be patient. When is comes to filing support tickets there is no such thing as including too many details. I have flagged this thread for Staff attention.

Not sure if this is what you are seeing – but it could be a feature

When I had FTP access I think I saw two or three copies of the same picture – the original and then at least one thumbnail that was in the 6 or 7 kb size – so when you displayed a thumbnail (small) picture all that was loaded on a visitors screen was the small size and then you got the larger one when you clicked on it – might have been only for galleries but my memory is a bit slow now and I don’t have the time for the research –

Nope… the files are all exactly the same size but each with slightly different names (example: [Image]X and it’s doppelganger [Image]X4)….. and each can be individually deleted without affecting other versions/ copies.

Haven’t a clue… it’s like they got imported multiple times but the number doesn’t add up right for that… the closest would have been 5x, but that should have me with 8570. My old host gave me a mirror of my entire original blog which, with all original Media included, comes to just under 400 MB… but that same Blog after import to WordPress.com now has over 1.2 GB of media alone. That just can’t be right….

Got to be a screw up in the import somewhere, all I can figure….

Not certain if ‘bumping” a topic is allowed… (My apologies in advance if it’s a no-no….)

But…. I still haven’t heard back on either support ticket I submitted on this and I’m kinda stuck until I do.

My main concern is that I can’t really add more new content until I know if I’ll have to flush everything to fix my problem. Not a huge thing…. but I do miss my daily Blog fix.

Have you heard back from Staff on this yet?

  • Unknown's avatar

I did hear back after 4 days (Fri), but the support person seemed confused as to what I wanted….

I replied to that email…. (which I hope actually goes through, with my luck that’s probably not the right way to respond) and gave more details, but haven’t heard back yet. I understand that there’s nobody working weekends, so I’m not expecting another reply till probably Tues.

His confusion seemed to be whether I wanted to delete all content on my Blog and that’s not it at all…. I want to know if once I delete all the media in my current Media Library that I’ll be able to re-import emjust/em the Media once more. Not the whole kit-and-kaboodle….. unless of course that’s the only fix available.

That’s assuming that such a re-import doesn’t result in that huge pool of duplicate files yet again…..

Let me see if I get this correctly. You can remove everything from your Media Library, and it will increase your available space and that media will be a) gone forever and b) detached from your posts.

Just keep in mind that re-importing your images, even if they are the same ones that were originally attached to your post, won’t actually re-attach anything. You will have your images in your Media Library, but not attached to anything (and thus your posts will have no images, you’ll have to re-insert them for each post).

    Does that answer the question?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m still waiting for some kind of answer from support as well – and all I want to know is why the pictures are being doubled (and sometimes tripled) and how to avoid it. I post using Live Writer 2011. Any ideas?
