multiple posts on secondary pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to create a secondary page to post pictures, stories, etc… on from time to time that users can comment on and maybe even rate individually. So far I have only learned how to make 1 post per page, which just won’t work for what I am trying to accomplish here. Is this possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Without a link to your blog, we cannot tell. It depends.

sorry, just updated my profile so it should link to my blog now. Regardless, its joelikes.wordpress.com

    joegeis,
It’s more efficient if you provide a link to your blog when asking questions in the forums; usually we need to see your blog to be sure you are in the right forum and to provide accurate advice.

    Is this you: http://joegeis.wordpress.com/

Pages and posts are two very different things. Pages are static, while posts are dynamic. There is only one post page per blog—calling it a page makes for some confusion.

If you want pictures that readers could comment on, one or a few at a time, post them as you would a regular post. Then add a category like “Pictures.”

In some themes you could use a navigation tab to allow your readers to click and find all your images (which you’ve categorized as “Pictures”). But in your theme that does not work.

What you could do is to place a prominent link in your sidebar to your category page. Your category page link would look like this: http://joegeis.wordpress.com//category/pictures/

oops. didn’t refresh before posting. Thanks for providing your link.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for the info. I will either change themes or use categories. You verified what I was worried about: that only the main “page” is a “post page.” Lol, does that make sense?

    Thanks,

    @joegeis

Yes, that confuses lots of people. But take a look at Blogger: they have only the one page, a posting page. (Well, I guess they also have an about page, but it’s not formated in themes.) If you see static pages as a bonus, then it might be easier to understand.

Here is an article with more specific info:

Oh, note that even if you change themes to be able to use the linked header tab, you will still need to make categories. The link in the tab would be a link to the dynamically generated category page.

Unrelated, but in Digg3, you can have only one row of header tabs before it gets messed up, so if you are going to have more main parent pages, you’ll want to change themes. Or make some of your main pages into child pages, then use a pages widget in a sidebar.

If you snoop around the internet you will find blogs that appear to have more than one posting page, but when you look under the hood, you will find that they are using categories to produce that effect.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks again. I’m going to tinker with this and will post again if I get lost, lol.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, so it didn’t take me long to mess this up, lol.

I created a blank page with this as the title: ICanHasFunny?

I want the title to be ICANHASFUNNY? and as you can see it shows up properly on the homepage, but doesn’t link to anything. I’m assuming I have the target URL wrong. I only have 1 post with the “Pictures” category so far.

    Thanks,

  • Unknown's avatar

oops, I didn’t put the code in backticks. Here we go.

    <a href="http://joegeis.wordpress.com//category/pictures/">ICanHasFunny? </a>

/facepalm! Looks like I liked to my other blog (joegeis) instead of my new one (joelikes). Lets see if this fixes it…

  • Unknown's avatar

It seems to be working correctly now. I might stick with this theme, because the header doesn’t look too bad.

Thanks again for the super speedy support!

We are your fellow bloggers! And you are welcome.

(you can change the header image on Freshy—the link tab looks ok)

  • Unknown's avatar

changed themes to one with no tabs. I really like the look of “Sunburn” and the html I used for the navigation on the side looks great, but the main column is sooooo thin!! I imagine there is no way to change that though, right?

If it is possible, you’d have to have a working knowledge of CSS (there is not much support in the forums here), and pay for the upgrade. You can experiment for free, but your changes won’t be saved or public.

I don’t know CSS, but I’ve seen people asking about making the content column wider so it might be possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

okay. I guess I will live with it, or change themes again, lol. Good thing changing themes is easy!

    Hello people

I am new to wordpress. I am having the same problem as joegis.
strangely enough we are using the same theme. I noticed that the
homepage is the only posting page on wordpress.

My question to you and thesacredpath is, have to you found a way
to post articles on other pages other than the homepage. I have
seen other people’s blogs and they seem to be able to do this.

@womensnationalcommission, we need a link to the blog please. The site linked to your username is not a wordpress.COM blog.

See this response from me above: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/multiple-posts-on-secondary-pages?replies=18#post-362926 . “Separate posting pages” is smoke and mirrors using categories, nothing else.

With the introduction of the new iNove theme, it is now easier to give the appearance of multiple post pages.

Set your top menu bar to show the categories rather than pages (appearance > iNove theme options). It will even show dropdowns if you have subcategories. You then put the pages widget into your sidebar to provide navigation for any static pages you have (about, etc.).

In my opinion setting the menubar to show categories is not a good idea if you have lots of categories. The theme will show the tabs in rows, but with more than one row of tabs, things get very confusing very quickly for your readers.
