multiple tweaks on the twenty-fourteen theme
-
Hi,
I’m excited about switching to the 2014 theme and would like to make a number of small adjustments.
-I’d like to remove the author/date/leave a comment/edit labels from all the posts.
-I’d like to center the text under the images in the grid
-It looks like the ephemera widget in the sidebar puts the post title below the post. Could I put it above?
-I saw a 2014 site with a header that cycled through different images. How could I do that?
That’s what I’d like to start with. Thanks for help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It is difficult for us, volunteers, to help without looking at your blog.
Is it alright to make your blog public?

Hi. Thanks for writing back so quickly.
I’m keeping it private until I work all the bugs out. Is this not the right forum to get CSS tips?
Is there a way to make it viewable to select people?
-
This is indeed the right forum for seeking help with CSS for sites hosted on WordPress.com.
Please invite me to view your site by following the steps in the Inviting Contributors, Followers, and Viewers support document.
Just make me the viewer as I only need to view your site. My WordPress.com user id is chaitanyamsv. Thank you.

Thanks for inviting me to view your site :-)
1. This CSS also removed the “uncategorized” from the featured posts at the top.
.site-content .entry-meta, body.home #featured-content .entry-meta { display:none; }Seems you disabled comments and ignore Edit link. Edit link wont be visible for your visitors and to you, if you log out of dashboard.
2.
body.home #featured-content .entry-title { text-align:center; } @media screen and (min-width: 1008px){ .grid .featured-content .entry-header { height: auto; } }3. I did not understand this. Could you give an example?
4. Please check the info under Featured Content and Featured Images section of Twenty Fourteen support document and see if you make the slider display by tagging some posts with a predefined tag name.
-
Thanks so much for your help!
3: In the sidebar, I’m using the Twenty-Fourteen Ephemera widget for displaying video and audio clips. However, the clip is displayed first, then the caption, then the name of the post. I’d like to know if I could list the name of the post first.
4: It’s not the slider I want to change. It’s the header. I thought I saw another 2014 site with that feature, but now I can’t find it. Sorry.
Thanks again. I appreciate the help. : )

3. I could not make it work despite spending some time.
4. Ok, may be you spotted a self-hosted site.
-
Thanks for trying.
By the way, I still get the “uncategorized” labels on the sticky posts. I also see the date on the posts within the widget. Do you know how to fix those?
-
I still get the “uncategorized” labels on the sticky posts.
You haven’t added the following CSS I gave you earlier :-)
.site-content .entry-meta, body.home #featured-content .entry-meta { display:none; }I also see the date on the posts within the widget.
This CSS also removes the “Leave a comment” link besides the date.
.widget_twentyfourteen_ephemera .entry-date, .widget_twentyfourteen_ephemera .comments-link { display:none; } -
Thanks again! I did, however, make that “uncategorized” edit earlier. Is it possible it was removed?
I made the new edits and still see dates and comments. Does it take a while for the edits to take place?

I’ve made the edits again and notice they aren’t staying in CSS. Is there some reason? I’ve made certain to save the changes, but upon exiting and reopening, I see the changes are not there.
-
Your site looks good to me. There are neither dates nor comments. Please link a post if you still see the dates.
The changes are typically instant. But rarely there might be browser cache preventing the changes.
Please let me know if you need anything else.
-
For some reason, the changes weren’t staying, but I rebooted WP and did it again and they did. Yes, your edits are great–thanks so much!
I do have another question for you: is it possible to create a page without any visible links (maybe a different menu?) so that viewers would only be able to see that page and not browse the rest of the site? I’m trying to create a page for agents to send their clients to see my work but not be able to contact me directly.
-
We can certainly hide menus on certain pages using CSS but it seems there is no dashboard setting to control the menu visibility. I may be wrong.
-
I appreciate all your help. I’ll try to find a solution. This issue isn’t as pressing as some of the others.
-
…but it seems there is no dashboard setting to control the menu visibility
That is correct. You can, as staff-happychia says, hide the menu on select pages by using the page specific body class. In the opening body selector of each page of your site, is a unique ID selector. You can find this by using the Web Inspector built into your browser, or by viewing the source code for the page/post, etc. As an example, using the web inspector in my browser, I found that the unique page id body class for your Karma page is page-id-1655. In CSS, classes are preceded by a period ( . ), so to hide the menu on the Karma page, we would do this:
.page-id-1655 .primary-navigation { display: none; } -
I just found your response–thanks.
How do I find the page id? When I use the web inspector I see a bunch of gibberish. Never mind–I got this one. (Yay for me.)
Where would I put this line of code so that it applied to one (and not all) pages?
-
I would add it below any existing custom CSS you have. Since you are using the page id, the browser will only apply that rule to that particular page.
