Multiple versions of a post are being published. Why, and can I delete them?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yesterday I was learning more about the WP reader and following blogs. Then I followed my own blog to see how it looked. To my dismay my posts are being published multiple times, and I can’t figure out how to delete published posts.

Is publishing permanent? Can I delete posts that have been published, or am I limited to deleting them locally (i.e. Dashboard, “all posts”).

Please help — I don’t want to be spamming people following my blog.

    Many thanks!

You can delete multiples; we get that often when people post using the app, for some reason. If you post from the dashboard it doesn’t seem to happen.

I would copy all the text, then go to Edit the multiples and delete them. That way if they all vanish or you delete one too many, you can just paste it in again.

    Thanks! for responding.

I don’t see these duplicates unless I use the reader.

If I go to my blog, I see a list of each single post, with no duplicates. I have the opportunity to edit or delete posts. (I assume is what you meant?)

But when I go into the reader, in my smartphone app or laptop, there are duplicates and triplicates of posts listed. These posts seem to be different revisions of a single post, e.g. the pictures are different.

Maybe the WordPress app is creating these duplicates, I do use my smartphone to blog most of the time.

But how do I delete these duplicates, if they only show up in the reader?. Is there somewhere I can see and change the posts the reader is showing the world?

    Many thanks,

The app can’t create posts with different images. Did you edit the posts and change the images in them? Did you change the posts titles? Did you edit the datestamps on the posts.

Thank you for helping me out, and so many others it seems.

Yes, I think that I’ve done all of the things you list. Do you think that these things created multiple copies of a post? Is there some reason not to do these things? I am teaching myself how to blog, are these blog sins? I’m happy to stop sinning and educate myself, but I’m not finding anything about this topic.

At the dashboard I do not see multiple versions of a post when I am at the dashboard.

In the reader I do see duplicates. Where are they — can I find and delete these duplicates?

OK, thanks. I have subscribed and look forward to their wisdom about this.

I don’t believe you can delete them from the Reader. Also note that every time you change a Title or a date stamp you are breaking a link. That’s not good practice. See here for why and keep in mind that it’s Google that sends significant traffic to blogs not the WordPress.com topics pages. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/08/05/avoid-creating-404-pages/

If anyone reading these words knows how to delete multiple revisions of a post on reader I would really appreciate knowing how to do that. At this point, trying to fix this, I will have 4 versions of one post published. It wasn’t that good!

Thank you TT, your post was very helpful. I didn’t even know that I was creating 404 page confusion. After reading your post I found my own “Page not found,” “Apologies, but no entries were found,” etc. out there.

I had turned publicize off and assumed that, since I was still playing and learning, that I wouldn’t screw anything up. Wrong.

It’s not likely that Staff will get back to you until tomorrow. Moreover, I am convinced that only they can remove the duplicate posts in the Reader that you created by changing Titles and date stamps.

Let’s be clear about this. Please post the URLs of the duplicates that you have deleted from the blog. If you have deleted them from the blog then they ought to disappear from the Reader too.

@insightfulcommentary – I’ve reset your feed and hopefully that will clear up the duplicates.

Going forward, every time you change a title or the published date on a published post, it will create a new item in your Reader feed as @timethief mentioned. Try to keep your revisions and date changes limited to your drafts to avoid this problem in the future.

    I hope that clarifies things.

Thank you both. I hope that this clears things up, I’ll try this later today. And I’ve learned a lot, won’t be doing this again.

    :) Happy blogger

Resetting the feed fixed the duplicates. Wonderfu!
