My admin button at bottom left is gone

  • Unknown's avatar

Until a few days ago, I’d open the button at the bottom left (was it ‘WP-Admin’? Can’t remember exactly and can’t see it now) to flip to the classic editor. It has disappeared and there seems no way back to the classic editor, which I was able to use up to a week ago. Suggestions? (The ‘classic block’ seems much different than the old ‘classic editor,’ as I’ve failed at some tasks I’ve done many times in the classic editor.)

  • Hi there,

It sounds like your account has been switched to the unified navigation, which is being rolled out on WordPress.com. You can read about this here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/unified-navigation/.

If your account has been switched and you used to access the Classic Editor through WP Admin, you’ll need to turn on the Advanced Navigation in your Account Settings>Dashboard Appearance to access the Classic Editor.

The Classic Editor is currently available, but in the long run, you’ll want to give the full Block Editor or the Classic Block a workout as the WordPress core development team do plan to phase this editor out in the future. The more you use it, the easier it will become.
We also have a guide specifically for writers and bloggers that you can find here https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor-for-writers-bloggers/.

    I hope that helps!

Thanks, fresatomica, and thanks for the tutorial link. (Forgive my cynicism but whenever anyone says, “this should help reduce confusion,” as in the “unified navigation” rollout link, I know we are in trouble 😊.) Anyway, your tip got me back to go for now. I will check out your new editor tutorial ASAP. Meanwhile, maybe one more question since you’ve been so helpful. One thing I do in the classic editor that takes 5 seconds – I often grab from a previous blog entry a horizontal row of 4 images (book covers), each linked to a different URL, and paste them in one click into a new blog entry. I tried every which way in the new block editor but they either go into separate vertical blocks or other issues. Any suggestions for duplicating my 5-second cut-and-paste per the classic editor?

We could probably make it faster, actually! Have you considered turning that section into a reusable block?
    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/reusable-block/

If you called the reusable block books, you’d just type

    /books

on a new line to add it to a new post, instead of copying and pasting.

Then, when you publish another book, you can add it to the block and it will automatically update throughout all the posts on the site.

Looks like a great tip, supernovia. I’m a little tied up right now — probably for the rest of the evening — but I wanted to get back to you to say I got your message and will try soon. Thanks!
