Why is there so much space surrounding my avatar? I tried to crop it so that it only showed the avatar but I can’t figure out what’s wrong.

It might be the size of the image you uploaded; if you can, try resizing it to a better match (128 x 128 pixels) so you don’t have to crop it and see if that helps. Also there might be a problem if it has transparencies in it; making sure it has a white background might help.

My avatar only appears beside my comments and not in the sidebar under recent comments. What do I need to do to get it to appear in the sidebar under recent comments?

Can you give a link to your blog? Is it just your avatar that doesn’t appear or everyone’s? It sounds to me like a feature of your theme rather than a problem with the avatar.

Avatars take some time to propagate throughout the system and you didn’t mention how long before you posted that you uploaded your avatar. If that’s not an issue then you my need to open the Recent Comments widget. Inside the widget you can set it to display avatars. You can also select the avatar size to be displayed. -
-> Presentation -> Widgets
scroll down to the “Available Widgets” box and drag the Recent Comments widgets out of that box and into the “Sidebar” box. Click the icon on the widget and when it open make your setting choices. Close the widget by clicking on the X on the top right hand corner. Then click “Save Changes”. -

Perhaps, it’s in your theme? Some avatars show differently in diff themes but Timethief gave you a better explanation there.

My avatar shows on my blog, but doesn’t show when I post on someone else’s blog. How do I resolve this?

When did you upload your avatar? There is a time delay. Are you signed in to wordpress.com when you post comments to other wordpress.com blogs on these occasions when your avatar does not appear?

Avatar display is not retroactive. -
Upload was done for the second time early a.m. yesterday. At first I wasn’t signed in, but learned I needed to be. I have been reading wordpress.com/avatars off and on. Thanks for the reminder. Not sure what you mean by avatar display is not retroactive. Would you explain further please. Thank you.

Ah, I was thinking something completely different. Thanks for clarifying, and I do understand. Although on any future comments on wordpress blogs, the avatar should be showing. Not sure why it is not doing so. Will keep reading, and will comment again if need be.. should the avatar not show. One more question…
When the avatar is visible, is there a way to prevent accessing my blog, making my screen name unable to be clicked on? I don’t want to have to password it either if possible. Is there a way? Thanks again.

Here’s where to un-link your wordpress.com username from your wordpress.com blog.
-> Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile
scroll down the right hand column to “website” and remove your blog’s url. Then click “Update Profile”.Do you understand that if you do this then when other bloggers click on your username they will no longer be instantly on your blog?
don’t want to have to password it either if possible
At present your blog is “public”. Do you want it to be “private”?

If you do want your blog to be private then you must change the setting on this page
-> Dashboard -> Options -> Privacy

Blog visibility:

Thank you everyone, especially timethief. This has been a great help. I’m actually brand new at blogging, and have much to learn. Really just wanted an avatar, ended up with a blog that I haven’t done anything in months with. I’m not certain that I will do much because it may not be my thing after all. I have a Pink Biz that takes up my time. Thanks again.

Well, I just made a post on another blog, and no avatar. :(
One thing I remember is that I did create a gravatar yesterday, using the rose pic. That is what I meant when I said I uploaded the picture again. Otherwise, the initial upload was done months ago. :/
Kudos if you can help me figure this out timethief. I am no Techno babe, that’s for sure. lol!
