I do not understand all these offers or what it is I am likely to gain or lose I am quite elderly and really using my blog as a form of personal expression I do not want to sell anything or buy anything

Thanks Gina I have never seen ads on my blog in fact I have never had any replies except from family who faithfully take a look . this makes me feel a bit sad. Is what I write of so little interest I ask myself.
I would be more than happy to pay that small sum per month to keep what you do going even it if gained me nothing but as I have said I am not a whiz kid far from it and I struggle a bit so any advice will be welcome -

Well, there is a bunch of things you can do (for free) to get more traffic on your blog and probably receive responses from others too, not only your family.
Remember though:
Having a small audience of people you care about is better than having a million visitors and not knowing any of them.
Are you a member of any social media sites? Like Facebook or Google+ or anything similar? You can promote your blog posts on these channels. People can like it and share it further so it can reach more readers.
You can help search engines like Google to index (visit, read and list) your site. support.wordpress.com/search-engines
Use Categories and Tags when you post something.
Try the Discover feature to find fellow bloggers who share your interests, read their posts and leave them comments. You can connect, make friends so they might read and comment your posts too. :) Click here: discover.wordpress.com

Now I must be honest with you Gina I am very elderly but still in touch with Life and helping my grandchildren so please do not lose patience with me -
Take your time, no worries! I’ll be here when you will return :) when you have time to deal with improving your blog and want to discuss the things you find unclear or need a helping hand to manage something.
Enjoy every minute of being in touch with Life. Your grandchildren must be proud you keep up with technology and even have an online journal!
