My blip.tv videos have disappeared

  • Unknown's avatar

I just lost all my blip.tv videos. I have been using the short code(for years) ie [blip.tv ?posts_id=4601993&dest=-1] which WordPress appears to have recently rejected. Is this a temporary situation?
Is this code[blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/g6VTgpjxbQA?p=1%5D the preferred code? And do I have to change all my videos.

  • Putting this on a single line in your editor window should embed the video automatically:

    http://blip.tv/play/g6VTgpjxbQA?p=1%5D

The shortcode format you provided doesn’t quite match up what’s in our Blip.tv documentation:

    [blip.tv ?posts_id=4601993&dest=-1]

Our documentation shows that the full URL to the video is needed, like this:

    [blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/g6VTgpjxbQA?p=1]

I tested both of these embedding method and they work for me. Just let me know if you have any trouble with them.

If you have a great many videos you embedded over the years without the full URL in them, could you please let me know and I’ll see if we might be able to fix them for you in a more automated way.

My entire blog has the short code without the url except for a few entries. I was under the impression that wordpress didn’t want any url’s in their code because it wasn’t safe. If you could fix them without me changing my entire blog it would be great. Thank you.

In your reply you wrote that “I tested both of these embedding methods and they work for me. ” Did the short code work for you: ie [blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/g6VTgpjxbQA?p=1%5D?

If it worked for you why wouldn’t it work for me?

Yes, that format for the shortcode worked fine for me in a test post.

I’m not sure why it didn’t work for you. Would you mind creating a draft post with this shortcode and letting me know so I can take a look and see what might be the difference? Thanks.

URLs from our media partners like Blip.tv are fine, and that format is exactly what we specify in our documentation, as you can see here:

  • Thanks very much. The shortcode I see in that post is in this format:

    [blip.tv ?posts_id=1161960&dest=-1]

I’ve modified the shortcode in your draft so you can see how the format is supposed to look:

    [blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/g6VTgpjxbQA?p=1]

Thanks for your quick response. Up until very recently WordPress accepted this shortcode ie: [blip.tv ?posts_id=1161960&dest=-1].

I was aware that they were using this code also: [blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/g6VTgpjxbQA?p=1%5D; but because I knew that they didn’t like any http:/blip.tv etc in their editor I kept converting it to the short code without the url in it.

Do I have to change all my videos manually now?

  • I’ve asked one of our developers to take a look and see if there’s anything we can do.

Do you have a sense of approximately how many Blip.tv shortcodes you’ve used throughout your site? Thanks.

I have 112 published pages. I have at least 112 short codes. I have at one video on each page and some pages could have several. I could give you an accurate count if you want. I’ve been converting Roxie’s Diary to your http/blip.tv code but I’m keeping the short code in the editor also; since it doesn’t show up in the published page and you might allow me to use my short codes. It’s a very arduous task converting all my short codes. I’ ve only done about 7 or 8.
    Thanks for your quick response.

Thanks again for your quick response.

  • Thanks for the info. We’re still looking into this on our end and I’ll keep you posted here.

Hi – apparently Blip.tv changed something in their servers recently, and that caused the problem you described. We’ve worked around that and your shortcodes should all be working again.
