Hi there,
Your stats will only be impacted if you visit your site when you are not logged in as the administrator of your site. That hit will only be recorded once, regardless of how often you return that day from the same IP address.
When you are logged in as your site’s admin, a visit is not recorded.

i was logged in ? strange, as there was a whole run of almost hourly hits for the past week or so. so i tried making the blog not public and then it recorded my many visits ~ now its public again and its back to a few 1 per hour visits. this blog was mostly unvisited a few weeks back. this activity in unusual considering its history?

Ah, that makes more sense! If a site is set to private then all visits, even from the account owner, are counted.
In regard to the more regular visits, sometimes a blog gets discovered by a random person or two via the WordPress.com Reader and so experiences traffic that it hasn’t previously received. Depending on your own engagement (how much you post, etc), the traffic may die off or may increase. Since we’re talking about others visiting your site there’s no real way to predict.
