My blog has been copied
-
Before I get my knickers in a knot I thought I’d come here. My routine check with Copyscape shows my entire and up to date front page has been copied/cached by a site called Xtremeproxy. The whois almost makes it sound benign but I don’t really know. Advice, please? The whois is here:

Thanks in advance

There are many threads on blogscrapers in the forum searchbox. Many people are experiencing the same problem but it is not a wordpress.com problem due to rss feeds sploggers are having a rip-off field day. For reference: Here’s the link to Lorelle’s post on what to do if you do discover someone has been stealing your blog content http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2006/04/10/what-do-you-do-when-someone-steals-your-content/

that is a link to their domain registrar; host contact info is at one more click: http://whois.domaintools.com/66.90.66.78

Tx. I guess I was hoping someone would say they know the outfit, it’s not a big deal. I’ve just emailed them so I’ll see what happens.

Actually 66.90.66.78 is a known proxy as has been for quite some time. Heck, it’s on one of Wikipedia’s block lists:

I know how to block/send to spam an IP from leaving comments, but is there any way to block access to my feed? I’ve read Lorelle’s info and see nothing there. I’ve looked at every option in the dashboard and don’t see it if it’s there.
Thanks again.

>> is there any way to block access to my feed?
yes, there is. don’t export it at all; set # of posts to export equal ‘0’ (zero).
-
Actually a zero setting wouldn’t work on my blog. -> Options -> Reading
I typed in zero but it displayed 1 post. So it seems that 1 is the lowest number that can be chosen. However, we can choose “summary” rather than full feed and that’s what Lorelle pointed out. -
>> a zero setting wouldn’t work on my blog
hmm, I thought it’s logical: if someone doesn’t want to export their feed, then setting # of posts to zero would cease it.
appears I was wrong, but that behavior doesn’t seem to me as a right thing. even if the feed is updated by just one post it’s still whole lot easier to copy blog contents than scrape its site.

I just might have to go to a summary, timethief. I’d rather not and I’ll give it 24 hours, but if that’s what it takes, that’s what it takes. I’ve contacted the ISP as well as xtremeproxy and I’ve contacted Feedburner. I’d read Lorelle’s info once before, when my blog was in its infancy. And I distinctly remember thinking it would never apply to a foodie like me. Sometimes even I am amazed by my naivte. Tx.

Here’s an update – the Chicago firm listed by whois with the IP no longer has anything to do with that IP. The owner had no idea he was still being listed. He gave me the correct abuse/support email addys and also contacted them on my behalf — and his. Could not be nicer and took this very seriously. I’ve contacted them too and I’m waiting for a reply.
The ultimate irony is that the copied page includes the Copyscape and CC info.
