My blog has been hacked

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog jelford.wordpress.com was hacked a few weeks ago. I deleted the posts/adverts which were added and changed my password. Then a few days later it was hacked again. This seemed very strange as I had changed the password. Did the hacker have access to my account from before? If so, what can I do about this? Thanks in advance. James

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Oh no! That’s never a fun time. The first thing I’d do is check to see if they’ve added any users to your blog with administrative access. If there’s other administrators on the blog, they can do anything to that site without having to compromise your account again. Check out this support document for info on removing users: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#removing-users

Also, if you have any other uses on your site that you have legitimately added, reset the passwords for those accounts as well. Delete any users who are no longer active if applicable.

I’d also change your own password again as well just for good measure.

These are all great tips. Definitely make sure that your email address is secure by changing your password there. We have tips for creating a strong password here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/selecting-a-strong-password/

Since this has become a reoccurring issue for you, you may want to enable two step authentication:

    Enable Two-Step Authentication

This is a more secure way to access your account since it requires something you know (your password) and something you have (your phone).

Some email providers also offer this feature, so you may want to look into enabling it for your email address as well.

Let me know if I can help with anything else!
