My Blog has been spammed

    My blog seems to have been spammed – all of a sudden we have these tacky ads appearing at the bottom of articles, that I would really like to get rid of. I received an email this morning from wordpress letting me know I had a new comment – however this comment was spam, so I clicked on the link to approve/disapprove it, however the page the link opened didn’t have the comment on it. Since then these tacky ads have been appearing, and if you could let me know how to get rid of them, that would be very much appreciated!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements. We try hard to only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

    Please let us know if you have any more questions!

    I’ve just discovered the same thing on my blog today. Would have been nice if wordpress had made this risk evident upon signup! Perhaps it was there in the fine print. But it seems like a sneaky way of trying to get people who have been blogging for free to suddenly start paying. Any idea how long I can expect these ads to appear – are they temporary, or once they are on my blog, are they there to stay forever (unless I pay)?

    @equineocean. The ads started back in 2006 (I think that was the year, but it has been awhile). It is not a “sneaky way” of trying to get people to pay. Did you read the terms of service when you started your blog?

    @equineocean
    WordPress.com has been running advertising on our free hosted blogs since 2006. Many bloggers do not know this because they did not read the ToS despite ticking the box that said they did in order to get a free blog. They likewise did not read the features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in many bloggers do not realize they are there at all. The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.

    Yes, as I said, fine print. An unfortunate side affect of so much we do online these days… Still curious though, given that the adds appeared randomly, do you know if they might also disappear randomly? Sure, they might come back unless one pays for the upgrade, but curious as to if it’s a temporary thing that comes and goes?

    We have no idea which blogs have ads displayed on them today and which blogs will have ads displayed on them tomorrow. What “occasionally” means has never been defined.

    Ok, cool, thank you for all the help.
