My blog says private even though reading/site visibility allows search engines.

    Hi,
I bought the domain name birthdaysonabudget.com from wordpress. It’s not showing up under my domains. I think it’s pointing at my wordpress blog – birthdaysonabudget.wordpress.com but when I type ithe new domain name into google I get a message that the blog is private. I have gone to reading/settings and set it to the first choice on site visibility but the site is still showing up as private which makes people log in. I want it to be public so people can access it easily. Can you help me with this? Thank you! Leigh

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Leigh,

Your domain name birthdaysonabudget.com is currently linked to your WordPress.com blog with the free address leighfrillici.wordpress.com. That blog is set to private, and you can change its privacy settings here:

    https://leighfrillici.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

If you prefer, I can move your domain name so it’s linked to your blog at birthdaysonabudget.wordpress.com, instead. Please let me know if you’d like me to do that for you.

Hi Rachel, I didn’t realize it was pointing at the wrong blog. I will make the leighfrillici wordpress blog private again. Could you point the domain name -birthdaysonabudget.com to my birthdaysonabudget.wordpress.com blog? I would so appreciate it!! Thank you much!

Sorry to bother you with one other question….

I am trying to create a menu at the top of the first static page of the blog under the category – party themes. I went into appearances, menus – chose party themes placed 3 categories underneath as a subset but no matter how many times I press save and refresh the blog page the menu does not show up below Party Themes. I’m using the Skylark theme. The blog is birthdaysonabudget.worpress.com

    thanks again!

    Leigh

    Hi Leigh,

Sure thing! I moved your domain birthdaysonabudget.com to birthdaysonabudget.wordpress.com, so you’re all set with that.

I went into appearances, menus – chose party themes placed 3 categories underneath as a subset but no matter how many times I press save and refresh the blog page the menu does not show up below Party Themes.

You’re almost there! To make the menu show up on your site, you’ll need to assign it to a location in the Menu Settings (on the same screen where you create the menu itself). In the Skylark theme, that’s the “Primary Menu” location.

Then, you can save the menu and it should appear on your site. We also have a guide for that here: Custom Menus

If you have any other questions, please let me know!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you much! I appreciate all of your help. I’ll try that for the menu. I just noticed when I pull up the site on my mobile and go to a page, not all of the pictures are showing up. When I click on the box where the picture should be it says you must be logged in and a member of this blog. Any words of advice for that?

Thank you for all of your wonderful help.

    Best Wishes,

    Leigh

    Hi Leigh,

I took a look, and some of your pages are using photos that are uploaded to your private site at leighfrillici.wordpress.com. You’ll be able to see them while you’re logged in to your WordPress.com, but if you’re logged out you won’t be able to see them.

To fix that, you’ll need to edit those pages, delete each photo that isn’t working, and add the photo again directly from your birthdaysonabudget.wordpress.com blog. (You’ll need to upload those images to that blog first, if they aren’t already.)

That should fix it for you, but please let me know if you run into any trouble or have questions about that. :)

Thank you! I appreciate all of your help.

    Best Wishes to you,

Back again :)) OK, fixed the menu. The subcategories show up under the drop down box of Party Themes, but the content is not linked to it. It says nothing found. Thank you in advance for your help…Leigh

    Hi Leigh,

There isn’t any content found on those category pages because you don’t yet have any posts using those categories. Only posts with those exact categories will appear on those pages.

You can check to see what categories your blog has and how many posts are in each category under Posts > Categories in your blog’s dashboard here:

    https://birthdaysonabudget.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

We also have more details about how category pages work here: Category Pages

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

    Hi Rachel,

Back again! I’ve been going through each problem and fixing it with your help. Thank you! I’m back to the issue of not seeing photos on my mobile phone when I look at the site.

As you suggested, I downloaded the photos to the birthday on a budget site…but, for example, the first couple of pictures I replaced on the Party fit for a Princess page still show up as blank. Any thoughts?

    Best Wishes,

    Leigh

    Hi Leigh,

I’m seeing the first few pictures on your “A Party Fit for a Princess” page just fine on my phone. It’s possible that your phone saved the old version of that page (without the replaced pictures), and you’ll need to refresh the page to see the change there.

To completely clear out the saved information in your phone’s browser, you can clear the browser’s cache. This page has more details about how to do that on an iPhone: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser’s-Cache-on-an-iPhone

This page has details about how to do it on an Android device: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser’s-Cache-on-an-Android

Please let me know if you continue to have trouble with those photos!

Great, thanks. Trying to work everything out here. The latest thing is that when I search for my website on Google, the site comes up with this message:

A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt – learn more.

I’ve read some of the comments about robotst.txt that recommended unchecking Discourage search engines. That has been unchecked for a while now. Why is it not reading my site and giving a description?

    Thank you,

    Leigh

Hi – on the picture issue. I had other people look at my site from their computers and they are seeing blank white boxes where pictures should be. Do I need to delete all content from the other location (an older version of my site under a different wordpress name) to free up the privacy settings? It may just be that I have to reload everything.

    Thank you,

    Leigh

    Hi Leigh,

It can take Google some time to catch up when you switch from discouraging search engines to allowing them. Google may just need a little extra time to see your site and add a description to its search results.

One way to try to speed that process up is to add Google’s Webmaster Tools. We have a guide for setting that up here: Webmaster Tools

On the picture issue, I did notice that only the first few pictures on that “A Party Fit for a Princess” page have been replaced. You’ll need to delete all the content that’s coming from your other site and replace it by uploading the photos to this site — otherwise, visitors won’t be able to see it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Is it possible to delete the content from the old site. I would need to do that anyways. Would that help the picture situation on the new site — Birthdaysonabudget.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Leigh,

You’re welcome to delete the content from your old site — you can do that from the dashboard here: https://leighfrillici.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

We have more tips about that here: Empty Site

However, that won’t make much of a different on your other site at birthdaysonabudget.com. You’ll still need to replace the photos linked to your old site by uploading them and adding them to birthdaysonabudget.com.

  • Unknown's avatar

Got it! Thanks. Latest problem. My site is the Skylark theme on wordpress.com. I was hoping to make my images pinnable. Is it possible to add pins to images? I know you can add them at the bottom of pages/posts. Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Leigh,

WordPress.com doesn’t currently support making individual images pinnable (using the pin button on images). However, I let our developers know that’s a feature you’re interested in so they can consider adding it as a feature. :)

You can see all the Pinterest features currently on WordPress.com on these pages:

Awesome! Thanks. I think a lot of people would enjoy that feature. Thank you for your wonderful help. The site is up and running! Best wishes,

    Leigh
