My Blog Suddenly Stopped Letting Me Change Link Colors
-
I have always changed the color of my links to blue and never had a problem.
Today, it suddenly won’t let me change :(
I switched from chrome to firefox and and it let me change them in firefox for a few minutes.
Now it stopped working in firefox as well.
Any ideas?
Thank you for your help
sample page – see the first link is blue, it is from a while ago, but the other links won’t change:

Hi there,
How exactly have you changed the colour in the past? Using the HTML editor?
Looking at the HTML your first link looks like this:
<span style="color: #3366ff;"><a style="color: #3366ff;" href="https://nosscr.org/state-medical-records-payment-rates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discount for record fees for disability claims</a></span>The second link looks like this:
<span style="color: #3366ff;"><a href="https://howtogeton.wordpress.com/2017/05/03/how-to-collect-your-records-through-your-lawyer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How to Collect Your Records Through Your Lawyer</a></span>While the rest of the links look like this:
<a href="https://howtogeton.wordpress.com/2017/05/26/how-cherry-blossom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">How Cherry Blossom Found Secret Medical Records</a>What you need to change the colour is the style attribute in the a-tag for the link. Using a span-tag won’t work.
So what you need to change the colour of a link is:
<a style="color: #3366ff;" href="https://nosscr.org/state-medical-records-payment-rates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discount for record fees for disability claims</a>without the span-element.

Thank you Mr. Happiness Engineer!
I admit that I have no earthly idea what any of that means.
I have always changed link color by selected the link and then clicking on the little color symbol at the top of the page.
I’m afraid I would literally die if I had to use HTML every time I made a link (ten million times per day).
– Do you have any ideas for what might have made my site suddenly stop being able to change link colors?
– Or is there a way to change the colors of ALL LINKS automatically?
My site is a free site for people (like me) who are poor and disabled.
Many people who read there have cognitive difficulties and having the links appear bright and easy to find does make it easier for folks to find their way around.
Thank you again,
💜💚💝🍭Lily

I tried editing your post and changing the colour using the toolbar button and it worked fine for me.
Make sure you completely highlight the links. Don’t just click on them. Clicking a link in the editor makes it appear as if it’s selected, but still make sure you select the entire text of the link:

The only way to automatically change the colour for all links is by using custom CSS, and for that you’ll need at least the Premium Plan.

I seem to be having the same problem. I have a Recipe blog using the free theme LIGONBERRY. I’ve had it for quite a while.
I created a page to use as a Table of Contents for my recipes.
I would put in the name of the recipe and, using the editor, click on the icon for adding a url – add the url of the recipe. Then I would select the name and change the color to Maroon – again using the editor and clicking on the icon for Text Color.
Well, now I can’t change the color AND several of the names are underlined. But when I select them and look at the editor, underline is not selected.
If I did anything differently before, I sure don’t remember it. But I’d love to know how to make my recipe names the right color in my TOC and get rid of the underlining.
Thanks! :)

I’m not a techie either and have no idea how to do techie stuff <sigh> -
OOPS, I meant to add above that I did look under customization for anything about changing color of links but found nothing.
Sorry! -
Please see my reply above. You need to select exactly only the linked text. If you select any spaces or punctuation that’s not part of the link, the colour change won’t work. This is a bug in the WordPress software, so we’re waiting for a fix on this from that end.
The easier method at this time is to change the text colour before you change it into a link.
AND several of the names are underlined. But when I select them and look at the editor, underline is not selected.
Links are automatically underlined. That’s standard styling for links on the internet, though individual themes might sometimes override the default styling.
The only way to not have links underlined is to add custom CSS to your theme, and you need a Premium or Business plan to do that. This is not something you can change in the editor.

That site is deleted. If you need any more help with this, please provide the correct URL of the site you need help with.

Thank you so much for your help.
I am continuing to have this problem as well. I have never had ANY problem changing the color of links and now it won’t let me.
I just tried your trick…. selecting only the linked text and no spaces.
it worked for about 3 minutes and then stopped working.
the problems are:
1. selecting the link and changing the color – I changed the first 5 links on this page blue, then it stopped working and the rest will not change at all.
2. changing the color before making a link – this works about 10% of the time. The other 90% of the time when I add the link the color disappears.
3. there is now a BLACK underline under all my links. This never happened before. You can see on the page below some of the links I made a while ago and they are underlined blue, but the new links I tried to make today are black?
I’m wondering why this suddenly changed when I never had any problems before? Thanks so much for your help 🍭 🌺 💖 lily

I’m wondering why this suddenly changed when I never had any problems before?
As I said above, this is due to a bug in the WordPress software that occurred with a recent update. Once the software is fixed, we can update it on WordPress.com, which will fix it here as well. But for now the steps I gave above are the only ways around it.
-
Thank you. Unfortunately like I said those steps only work 10% of the time for me :(
Do you have any possible time estimate when this might be fixed?
-
We don’t control the WordPress software, we just use it, so I can’t give you any estimate, no. Once the fix comes from the WordPress.org community it should be updated here within days, but I can’t tell you when that fix will come.
-
Thank you. Is there any way I can contact them to let them know about the problem I am having?
-
The issue has already been reported, so you don’t need to do anything else. We just need to be patient for the Core team to get to this.
But I’ve gone ahead and fixed that page for you at least. Looking at the HTML you had applied some colours to the pargraphs themselves, which were overriding the colours applied to the links. I fixed this directly in the HTML, but you can also do it by removing all formatting and then starting over, should this happen again.
To remove formatting, highlight the entire paragraph and click the Clear Formatting icon in the second row of the toolbar. That will remove the link, but also any other formatting already applies to the text. If you then change the colour, followed by adding the link, it should stick.

Kokkiah, thanks so much for your help!! That the URL was deleted was a big DUH on my part. I changed it without thinking about my question here! Apologies!!! But the info here is great, thanks so much for your patience! 😊
