My blog's width appears to have narrowed and I can't figure it out.

  • Unknown's avatar

Now some of my photos have been bumped down like I’m starting a new paragraph or something. I’ve searched through the forums and haven’t found any answers. The problem is present in both Internet Explorer and Chrome. Two days ago everything was fine and then yesterday the problem appeared and I hadn’t made any blog format changes during that time period. All I’ve done in the last 48 hours was add one new post and try to figure out this problem. I’d hate to think my only choice is to resize every single photo. PLEASE, not that again. I make that comment about having to resize photos because a few weeks ago when I changed themes one result of changing themes was the last photo in each row of four photos were somehow automatically resized. BTW, everything looks fine while I’m in editing mode. It’s when I go to “preview changes” or take a look at the published pages and posts that this mess becomes visible.

Thank you beautiful WordPress volunteers who help us who are momentarily lost,

    Hi Mary,

A quick question for you: do you by chance compose your posts in another text editor such as Microsoft Word or something like that and then paste it in to WordPress?

I ask because when I looked at the code for your most recent post, it looks far different from what our editors usually generate. While it’s generally fine for folks to compose in other editors, it’s also best that they import using the “Paste as text” button as the code which comes with these posts can do exactly what you’re experiencing. It can wreck havoc with your site:

    Microsoft Word

Let me know if you do use another editor and I’ll see what I can do to clear things up a bit.

    Good Morning,
I used to use Windows Live Writer, but that was probably close to two years ago. What I have done at times that involves Microsoft Word (MW) is copy and paste from WordPress (WP) to MW to check what’s in the code and possibly play around with it and then copied and pasted from MW back to WP. My last post was copied from another post (no use of MW). But maybe I used MW when I created the post I copied from – I can’t remember. The post I copied from was created on July 22nd. Is it possible for a post I created on July 22nd to affect the blog, as mine has been affected, at a later date?
Maybe important: recently I did change one setting for my blog. I requested a “Like” button be shown on every post. I realized my mistake when I saw a like button, not just on every post, but also on every page. I’ve removed the like buttons from the blog’s pages twice. I noticed today the like button is back on the contact, me, slideshows, and resume pages. I’m planning on turning the like button on every post feature off.
Thank you so much for your time and input,
    Mary Maude

I checked out your “Mighty Pretty Photos” and must say you lead a way cool interesting life!

If possible, I ask you add “Tags” to this help request because my choices might not be the clearest for future readers.

“Not all formatting will carry over cleanly, so you may need to tweak some settings.” From the link you shared above.

“I ask because when I looked at the code for your most recent post, it looks far different from what our editors usually generate.” A quote from you.

Maybe if you could share a couple of examples of what formatting needs tweaking in my last post I could start correcting my blog? I’m very willing to learn and then do the work necessary.

    Hi Mary,

Let me first point out that after again reviewing all of your blog posts on both a windows and a mac machine in several browsers, I have to say that to me your images don’t so much look like they are indented as they look centered. Was this not what you had intended for them, or am I entirely missing what your issue is? I’m sorry if so, please let me know what it is.

And as for the rest of your message (because you still brought up some excellent points), any issue that might be arising could definitely be from a post which was made on the 22nd, so once we’ve established what’s going wrong we should review that one as well (especially if you used MS Word for it in any way). On that note, even if you compose a post entirely in WordPress.com and then paste it in to Word, if you then re-copy it from Word and then re-paste it in to WordPress.com then the same problems can occur as if you had composed the entire thing in Word, so you’ll want to avoid that!

I absolutely appreciate and applaud your desire to learn, but teaching you what to look for can be a bit problematic via forum posts. With that said, the best way to learn is to open up a post that has been composed entirely in WordPress.com and then view the code of it (you do so by clicking over to the Text editor version, the Text tab in the upper right hand corner of the editor). You’ll see what the code should look like. Now open a post which has been pasted in from Word and look at the Text editor version there. You’ll immediately see the difference.

So there you have it! If you could let me know some details of what is going wrong, I’d appreciate it.

Oh, and thanks so much about the adventures. I have actually been very remiss in posting photos recently. I haven’t updated from the last several destinations. I’ll have to do that some time this week. :)

Yes, I used to have all four photos centered on the main column width. There is 18 pixels margin to the left of the four photos and 8 pixels margin between each photo. Each photo measures 175 pixels width. This leaves 15 pixels to the right of the four photos. On my blog’s theme’s page it lists the theme’s width as 757 pixels. Since the total width of the four photos (including their margins) equals 742 pixels all four photos should fit on one row within the main column. What I currently have is three photos on one row and the fourth photo on an additional row. I believe the width of my main column has narrowed somehow. I must also tell you the copy in my blog is taking up more lines and I have not recently increased the copy’s size so I imagine the narrowing of the main column is also causing the additional copy lines.

FYI: on my blog’s static page I changed the photo sizes from 175X200 to 160X183 so the four photos will fit on one row again in the narrower column.

I really don’t want to have to do this for the tons & tons of photos there are in my blog since I use this four photos in a row format through out my blog. Plus this doesn’t do anything to change the additional lines of copy that was created by a narrower column.

Any suggestions are so very much needed and appreciated.

Just to be clear the main column of my blog appears to have narrowed. I checked and I’m still using “standard” for all my pages and posts. I haven’t starting using any side widgets that would force the main column width to be narrower. Are you sure me using Microsoft Word on a single post created July 22nd would have affected the main column width for every page and post on my blog starting on and since August 4th, when the problem first appeared?

    Hi again,
You may want to check out the following, https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-syntax-default-width-changed?replies=3#post-1982925.
It appears one other person is experiencing their Syntax main column width narrowing. Night, night.

  • Unknown's avatar

OK, I understand the Syntax theme’s main column width has changed from 757 pixels to 697 pixels. From now on I’m going to size photos and copy to fit in a column width of 697 pixels. I will need to change the photo and copy sizes of previous pages and posts. This is very doable on my part – I appreciate knowing how to rectify my blog’s problem. I will follow amightywp’s suggestion of never using a Word doc for modifying code to head off future potential problems.

Amightywp, I slightly envy your interesting life – cool for you and I thank you for your willingness to help. I do get lost every once in awhile since I mostly don’t understand about coding and such.

I’m glad I could help! I’ll pass your comments on to Ash. :)

Were you able to fix the post from the 22nd that you and Ash were working on? Or were you still working on that?

  • Unknown's avatar

I believe Ash thought the July 22nd post was causing my blog’s main column to narrow. According to you the Syntax theme’s main column width was reduced by WordPress. Anyway, I resized all the photos though out my blog and reduced their width so now I’m back to having 4 photos in a row, which is pretty much the format I like using. I will heed Ash’s warning about not using Microsoft Word as an editor. I’m good, so’s my blog and I marked this trouble report as resolved.

Fabulous! Let us know if there’s anything else we can help with. :)
