My Categories have disappeared!

I used to have a list of Categories in my sidebar. That list has disappeared. I went to my Dashboard and Widgets and tried adding it back in, but it doesn’t work. I tried putting in Categories Cloud and other widgets and they work. But the Category widget doesn’t.
What has happened?

The first thing to try when something in the dashboard goes wacky, is to log out of wordpress, clear your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and then try again.
If that does not work, try a different browser to see if it is a browser related problem.

I logged out of wordpress, cleared my browser cache and cookies, and restarted by browser.
I switched from Firefox (which is what I usually use) and logged in under Internet Explorer.When I first logged in under Internet Explorer the Widgets page looked different in that I could click and drag the widgets into the sidebar. I dragged the Categories widget into the Sidebar. However, when I went to my blog, it was not there. Then when I went back into the Dashboard, the Widgets page was not the same anymore. There was an ‘Add’ option for each of the widgets.

you have the ‘Categories cloud” widget in your side bar.
There are, in fact ,two Categories” widgets.Right above the “Categories Cloud” widget is the “Categories List or drop down” Widget on the Widget page.
I think that is the one you want. -
I added the ”Categories Cloud” widget because I cannot seem to add the Catogories widget.
I clicked on “Categories”, clicked on the options I want, clicked on “Sidebar” and the position I want.
I used to have the “Categories” widget in my sidebar. It was a full list (not drop down), did not show parent-child relationship, and showed the number of posts with that category. Two days ago, this widget disappeared completely from my sidebar and I have been unable to recover it.

When I try to Add the Categories widget in, my widget counter in my dashboard goes up. It shows that I have 13 widgets although only 12 show up.
The position numbers of the widgets in my sidebar also adjust accordingly. However, the Categories widget simply does not show up at all.

Put it in the sidebar and wait an hour. Then do a cache clear and go look at your site. Sidebars are cached and it not infrequently takes that long for things to show up.

Just to be clear, I can add other widgets into the Sidebar with no problems at all. It’s only the Categories widget that doesn’t work.

In that case, try removing the Category Cloud first, then adding the Category Widget. It doesn’t make sense that you’d only be allowed one or the other, but then things built by engineers very often don’t make sense.

I want Categories rather than Category Cloud b/c I prefer the look of it.

At this point, I suggest you contact staff on Monday and ask them. I can’t think of anything else.
