  Chapters are out of numerical order once published

  I see that you have created a separate page for each chapter. I think the easiest will be to create a custom menu. Then you can just drag-and-drop them in the correct order. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

  You may want to consider the following: If you nest all the chapters under a single menu heading like “My Story” it will just make your menu appear neater and easier to navigate. See the heading Creating Static Parent Tabs in the support doc I linked to above.

  It’s actually much simpler than it sounds once you start doing it. Just follow the instructions in the support doc and don’t hesitate to ask here if you get stuck.
