my comments are off, but I didn't change any settings
-
Hi, I have gotten a “Comments Off” at the bottom of my last two posts. I have made no changes to my settings, and they seem to all be set to allowing comments as usuals.
Also (about the same time) my dashboard is messed up in is in 4 narrow columns instead of 2 — only 2 of the 4 columns are empty. Again, I have made no changes to my settings.
Thanks, Cindy

First line of second paragraph above should read: “Also (about the same time) my dashboard is messed up. It is in 4 narrow columns. . .”

Hi Cindy,
You can enable comments through this guide here. Currently you are missing the discussion module. To change the comment settings for a post or page that’s already published, go in to edit your post. Once you are there, at the top of the page you will see “Screen Options”. Please make sure “Discussion” is checked.
From that point, you will see the Discussion module. Make sure Allow Comments is checked.
As for your Dashboard, I am seeing 2 columns. Please upload a screenshot of the 4 narrow columns in your Media Library and I can take a look at it!
Cheers!

Hi Grace,
I’ve checked “Discussion” under “Screen Options” (2 or 3 times) for each post where there is a problem. I click on “Update” afterward. Each post still says “Comments Off,” and “Discussion” has unchecked itself when I go back and look.I don’t know how to take a screen shot, but I’ll try to figure it out.

I just checked again. Now “Discussion” is checked when I edit the two problem posts, but on the posts themselves, there is still “Comments Off”. I created a test post draft just now, made sure “Discussion” is checked, and then previewed it — and it also says “Comments Off”.
Thanks, Cindy -

Hi Grace,
Figured out that I also have to enable the comments in the Discussion box that popped up after I checked “Discussion” on the Screen Option. So my Comments are working now.

Well, not entirely. Please see if you can do something about my weird dashboard. It has 4 vertical columns, but two have empty boxes with dotted lines. I liked the old 2 column formats — once again, I haven’t changed any setting lately.
I uploaded a screenshot of the dashboard to my media library.
thanks, Cindy

Hi Cindy,
We have updated the Dashboard. The two dotted rectangles are placeholders for you to use as you can move the various elements to one of the four columns present.
The dashboard changes occurred in the WordPress.org project (the software that runs all WordPress sites, those on WordPress.com and those that are self-hosted by users). The process was documented and discussed here over the past few months.

OK, I pulled the lower boxes from the left to the empty places on the right. Makes more sense now, although I do prefer the old 2 large columns format.
Thanks for your help, Cindy
