My custom css keeps sliding back up to top; updates

  • Unknown's avatar

I have custom design, and have been editing css to add on to the basic styles. The CSS edit window showed code in plain text: now suddenly it is in colors and keeps scrolling back up to the top whatever I do, with the result that I CAN NOT edit anything because as soon as I let the right slider go, the place I was at is gone!

This must be a manager-level change. Colors are fine, but the scrolling has to stop.

    Other question:
Very often, half the time or more, when I make a change on a page (non-CSS, just editing) and go to update, there’s a long wait and then I am told: “Goshdarnit! Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.
We’ve just been notified of the problem. Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.” When I reload the site page, sometimes the changes show; sometimes not, but when I go back to edit, the changes are there, so it seems only the update failed. I don’t believe this is Matt’s fault or that it’s something you have just learned about; it seems an ongoing technical glitch. Is there anything I can do to update more securely?

If you write me, please don’t do so at the address on the profile. It is wrong, I can’t change it, and I can’t get into it even to set up forwarding. A Gmail problem. My real address is on the home page (bottom widget).

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please help. The upper footer text widget is off-center, and I want to do something with padding that will center it. Even if you tell me how to do this, and I wish you would, I would not be able to follow your advice. I have the custom design upgrade, and have used it effectively up till a few days ago. Now suddenly I can’t USE the CSS Stylesheet Editor, not at all! because it won’t hold still. I go to the end of the page, it slides back up to the top, and I can’t stop this. Why is this happening? How to change it back?

Yes, there has apparently been an update to the CSS editor.

What browser and browser version are you using?

Have you tried a different browser?

  • Unknown's avatar

The editor has been updated! It’s now using Ace. We checked it in all the latest browsers, so please do make sure you’re using an up-to-date browser and if you’re still having trouble let us know what browser and browser version you’re using as thesacredpath mentioned.

You shouldn’t be getting “Goshdarnit!” errors like you’ve described, so there could be something fishy going on with your site, I will check it out with some tests to see what I can find out.

You should be able to update your WordPress.com account email address to another email as long as the new email is not already used for another account at WordPress.com. You should be able to update your email address from the Users → Personal Settings page. Did you try that?

I am having the same problem as well. I am utilizing chrome and the CSS editor box keeps on moving up automatically making it hard to work.

  • Unknown's avatar

    BTW, I am using Chrome v. 18.0.1025.151

Hi, thanks for answering. I’m using Chrome. Just tried Firefox and yes, in that browser the CSS Stylesheet editor code no longer moves up without being told to. This is great, though since so many of us use Chrome, it might be a good idea to see if that is a general glitch.

I have tried again to change my address under Users–> Personal Settings, and it does tell me that my normal address is already being used. I have one other blog with WP, but for that one I am using a third address– not the one I want to change to. I don’t know where else my normal address might be being used, in WordPress. Is there a way to find out?

    Thanks again!

My Chrome is also 18.0.1025.151 m. Do we perceive a pattern here?

  • Unknown's avatar

As a temporary workaround, use Firefox for editing CSS and hopefully staff can get this sorted out quickly.

Also, you can try disabling any add-ons/plugins that you have installed in Chrome and restarting it to see if that makes any difference.

All righty, I’ve tested a bit and I can’t reproduce this so far. I tested with 18.0.1025.151 on a Mac. Still looking for ways to break it.

  • Unknown's avatar

I am working on a Windows 8 machine if that helps.

  • Unknown's avatar

It does. I’ll fire up my Windows 7 copy and see if I can reproduce the issue there.

I’ve tested in Chrome 18.0.1025.142 m on Windows 7, and the editor is working for me there as well.

I looked up the version number for the latest stable release of Windows and it shows “Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2.” Windows 8, the successor to Windows 7, is currently in development.

Apologies, I am using a windows 7 machine. I just recently got it and i thought that it had 8 installed. My bad. however my Chrome Version is 18.0.1025.151. maybe it is the combination of the two?

  • Unknown's avatar

When I upgrade Chrome, it says I have the latest version (mine ends in “142” not “151”). Are you using a beta version of Chrome?

  • Unknown's avatar

no, not that im aware of

  • Unknown's avatar

no extensions and no special plug ins that i can think of

@steph3534, go to http://wordpress.com/ and use the log in form at the top left of the page except instead of entering a username when you log in, enter your email address instead. If you have any trouble with the password, use the lost password form to get a new one. Once you are logged in with the email address you’d like to find out about, go to the following link and you will see a list of blogs associated with the email address you used to log in:

For anyone else who finds this thread and is having trouble with the Ace editor when using Custom Design on WordPress.com, please post your operating system and browser information in a reply here if you haven’t already done that.

Windows 7, Chrome 18.0.1025.151 m, and the CSS still slides upward. Chrome just yesterday upgraded itself from 142 to 151, but this made no difference to the cascading CSS code.

As for my address problems– seems I had a disused blog I had forgotten!… Sheri B. helped, and she writes that all is fixed. Props to Sheri and thanks to you all!
