My customisations have disappeared!

  • Unknown's avatar

I use customised Superhero theme (paid customisation upgrade). My blog’s appearance has suddenly reverted back to the default Superhero layout, which is very different from my usual layout and not welcome at all.

What I have tried to fix it:
Checked customised CSS – it is still there
Checked if the upgrade is still active – it is (expires Jan 2014)
    Cleared cache & cookies
Checked in another browser on another device – no difference

I have not done anything, have not modified the CSS recently and use my blog daily. So this must be a glitch in WordPress’ end. Are you able to see what is wrong and fix it?

    Thanks.

    Anna

Just to give an idea of what the customised layout looks like:

Pleasant dark/pale yellowish (background), grey-blueish colour theme
The post’s text font is bigger than in the default theme – and a softer font
Links are calm blue (not read) in the posts and sidebar
Links become dark yellow when hovering over them
Quotes are in grey-blueish boxes with rounded corners, and the font size is normal (not big). Font colour: black or dark blue
The drop-down links from the pages/tabs light up as dark yellow blocks when hovering over them
Comments are in big grey-blueish boxes with rounded corner and have big text (almost unreadable small in default layout)

That were just some of the main differences, not an exhaustive list.

The customisations were a lot of work and I paid to be allow to make them. There have been no problems with them before, please help make them reappear. Thank you.

That’s fixed already… Thank you WordPress!

  • Glad to hear it – happy blogging!

    Hi again Kathryn.

The same problem has occurred many times since I reported it, such as for example now. It usually fixes itself by the next day, but it happens often. What is the reason? It is annoying. I paid for an upgrade to be in charge of how my blog looks like, and I don’t feel like I am much in charge when it keeps reverting to the default theme whenever it wants to.

  • Hi there, thanks for letting me know. Your customizations definitely shouldn’t be going away intermittently, so I’d like to get to the bottom of this.

In the description of your customizations below, all the things you mention are what I’m seeing. For example, you mention:

Comments are in big grey-blueish boxes with rounded corner and have big text (almost unreadable small in default layout)

That sounds like what I’m seeing right now:

Do you see something different than that? Would it be possible to upload a screenshot of what you see to help in troubleshooting? This will be extremely helpful.

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library so I can see it. Thanks very much for your help.

The screen shot you show above is correct – that is the customised theme, that is what it should look like.

It still defaults out of customisation every day, usually from around roughly 7 pm (Sydney time).

I have attached a couple of screen shots showing the red links, small text and un-boxed quotes:

No… I haven’t. I will return soon and attach them. Right now I can’t upload them to my Media Library for whatever reason, I just get the message “Error saving media attachment”

  • Hi there, the next time your customizations disappear, could you please try the following during the time your customizations are gone:

    1) Loading these three pages in a browser and let me know what you see:

    http://s0.wp.com
    http://s1.wp.com
    http://s2.wp.com

    2) Run a traceroute:

    • Go to Applications -> Utilities folder.
    • Open Network Utility
    • Click Traceroute tab, enter the domain (s0.wp.com), and click Trace.
    • Copy all the output by clicking in a blank area, press Command–A to select all the text, then Command–C to copy it to your clipboard, then paste (Command–V) the output in your reply.

    Advanced Browser Troubleshooting

    3) Try a browser other than the one that you normally use – are your customizations there?

    4) Could you ask a friend or two to check the site at their end to see the customizations are still there for them at the same time you’re not able to see them? Please let us know whether those friends use the same or a different ISP than you.

Thanks for your help in trying to narrow down the source of this issue.

I have found the explanation … or at least, I have found out what triggers it, and apparently it happens in my end only.

When I use my standard broadband internet connection, the customisations are always there. However, my standard Internet connection (ClubTelco/Dodo for the record… don’t use them) stop working almost every day around 6.30 / 7 pm and often until around 10 pm.

When the Internet becomes extremely slow and stop working, then I switch to my husband’s business Internet connection, which is a different company operates via Sydney’s mobile phone network, so not via the broadband connection. That is when the customisations apparently disappears from my blog.

I have tried to switch on and off many times between the two connections when they both work, to see if that is really it … and sure enough, the customisations disappear every single time I switch to the mobile connection and come back when I switch to the broadband connection (how I switch: I tick either the broadband connection or the Vodaphone connection in My Mac’s airport menu).

Same laptop, same browser, same session… just the choice of connection determines how the blog displays in the browser, either customised version or default version of the blog theme. I find that very strange, but I guess that means that it is only me who sees the non-customised version.

  • Wow – thanks for the great detective work!

If you still want to try to pinpoint what the issue is with the problematic ISP, feel free to run the first two tests I gave you earlier. i.e. loading these three pages – http://s0.wp.com http://s1.wp.com http://s2.wp.com – and running a traceroute. It’s possible that your husband’s business ISP is blocking access to some WordPress.com servers, and those tests could help us pinpoint which.
