My customized CSS doesn't show up in iPhone

  • Unknown's avatar

This has been asked before by someone else but it wasn’t resolved.

The customized CSS shows up fine on computer browsers, but fail to load in iPhone when it’s not in mobile mode. Why does it do that and how do it fix it?

This site (www.sharonvanetten.com) for example, uses a very similar CSS to mine, but it shows up perfectly on iPhones (doesn’t go directly to mobile either). How do I change the setting so that (1) the CSS shows up on iPhones and displays my blog exactly the same as it is on a computer, and (2) doesn’t automatically point me towards the mobile site.

    Thank you so much!

What you typically get on an iphone is a “mobile” theme. These are designed so that the pages are more compact and load quickly on mobile devices. You can try going to appearance > extras and disabling the mobile theme, but do realize that the page will load considerably slower and it might not display properly. With Safari in iPhone, it might be alright, but many other mobile devices (read blackberry especially) have a browser that leaves quite a bit to be desired.

You might have to clear the cache in Safari in your iPhone to see the full theme.

If you don’t know how to clear the cache on iPhone Safari, go to settings > safari and scroll down to the bottom and you can clear history and/or cache and/or cookies.

    Hi!

Yes I cleared history/cache/cookies and still no use. The thing is, I’ve tries two other blogs that has the customized CSS from Twenty Two, and they both displayed normally on my iPhone (full site version). A friend of mine tried looking at my blog on his iPhone and also encountered the same problem – CSS wouldn’t load.

So I’m thinking something must be wrong with my CSS?

Did you to to appearance > extras and make sure that the mobile theme was deactivated?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yea, I just did that. So I made some progress just now – I switched my iPhone from 3G to Wifi, and the CSS was able to load perfectly.

However, the strange thing is that even prior to switching to Wifi, the phone was able to load the CSS from other blogs. What could this mean?

I haven’t a clue. On my blog if I have the mobile activated, my iPhone shows the mobile theme. If I deactivate the mobile theme and refresh my iPhone, I see the full blog theme as it appears in my laptop.

You know, there are a few things that just occurred to me to mention.

    1. I do not have the CSS upgrade on my blog here. I just turned off the mobile theme, so try going to it and see what you see. I too am using 2010.

    2. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it or not, but it might be that if you copied the entire CSS stylesheet into the CSS edit window and then made changes that it is somehow interfering with the custom CSS being seen on your iPhone. I don’t know that for a fact, but it is possible.

    3. There is a chance that your cellular carrier is caching pages at their sites so that bandwidth usage is lessened. If that is so, then it might take 24 hours before they clear and refresh their caches.

Yea. If I browse other people’s blog on my iPhone (using full site, instead of the mobile version), the phone is able to display everything properly. But my blog doesn’t display properly (CSS doesn’t load at all).

I just tried loading it again with 3G, and fails again! Also doesn’t work on my friend’s phone. Strange.

Is this because my CSS file is to big?

  • Unknown's avatar

It shouldn’t be. I’m seeing the mobile theme when I go to your blog on my iPhone. I’m not seeing a theme with no styling.

Give it 24 hours with the mobile theme deactivated and see what happens. Again, if your carrier is using caching, and the server has not retrieved the CSS file, that could be the issue.

Ok, I’ll take a look again tomorrow! Thanks!

Sorry but it’s still not resolved.

    (1) The problem has nothing to do with my individual iPhone, the full site CSS doesn’t show up on at least three iPhone (two different networks).

    (2) Other blogs with similar CSS do show up fine (CSS loads correctly).

So, there must be something wrong with my CSS…I just don’t know what. Please help!

The CSS validator finds 18 errors in your CSS but I don’t see anything that should be a show stopper: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http%3A%2F%2Flongconversations.wordpress.com%2F&profile=css21&usermedium=all&warning=1&vextwarning=&lang=en

The XHTML validator is reporting 75 errors and 8 warnings on your blog’s main page. I don’t thing these would cause the default to the mobile theme although I’m not sure.

I’m going to suggest contacting staff on this since they can snoop around in the backend and have way more tools available to them.

Thanks so much! I’m a CSS beginner, still so much to learn.

    I’ll contact the staff.
