My developer has offered me hosting or an alternative extremely expensive one!

A web developer has just created my new website. It’s not live yet.

For reference, it is a wordpress site with woo-commerce and some additional custom features. It is a membership website with accounts (just email and password) and it has a dashboard of content. This year I expect to have about 510 products on it max, and about 100 members/users.

Previously my hosting was on WordPress for $40 per month, but the developer has said that due to the new size of my website and traffic, I will need better hosting.

The developer has offered to give me a hosting package through them, as they said I need a cpannel hosting for my customizable dashboard. They offered me a package for $350 using an enterprise firewall from cloudfare and an enterprize server from digital ocean. When asked, they said they don’t store anything as it is all on the cloud.

    Here are my concerns:

    1. My developers team is spread out among multiple countries and maybe use a lot of contractors. As I will be storing my members data such as card details and addresses, I need to make sure it is secure. I have read online that it may not be as secure if your developer is hosting your website as they may have access to data and control of your website. But this option is a better price for me at $350 for the year.
    1. I asked them for a different option of a secure hosting package and they sent me a recommended one which is $199 per month, $2,388. This is very expensive for me and I didn’t think my website would be so big that it would need such expensive hosting. Here is the package: https://www.liquidweb.com/wordpress-hosting/dedicated-wordpress/. I suggested cheaper options such as bluehost and they said it was hacked often. I wonder did they send me an expensive option so I would then choose to go with their offer which was much cheaper?

    What do you recommend?

    Hello there,

It’s very hard for us to comment on what another development team may suggest, I’m afraid, but I can share a few comments on the service we offer here when it comes to WordPress hosting.

At “WordPress.com” hosting, we have one of the most secure hosting platforms that exists for WordPress anywhere. We have Akismet, the most trusted standard in protection, and numerous other systems to prevent attacks of all sorts. If anyone ever did get in, we have constant backups (all included in our plan prices) to rewind to. I saw you mentioned other WordPress hosting companies. I’m afraid that’s not something we comment on, but we can vouch for our own security, which is some of the best of any host anywhere.

We also have one of the fastest hosting platforms for WordPress, so lots of members and bandwidth are not an issue with us. We have multiple distribution points worldwide and unlimited PHP service workers, meaning sites can generate and display very fast anywhere, whatever they are showing. We don’t limit speed or bandwidth here either, and indeed, our system was used in the USA for the most recent solar eclipse coverage by NASA, who had staggering numbers of requests, and our system handled it without a blip.

Additionally, we offer the same speeds and security whether you are on an enterprise or starter plan. We don’t discriminate.

For a site like that, it sounds like you need the Business plan, which we charge $300/year for – https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Now that said there may be specific requirements your developers have set up. We have lots of membership sites on WordPress.com but it’s possible they may have created some unique code. There’s not a lot that won’t work on WordPress.com but we do block plugins that have security concerns or may cause problems to your site but even this is limited.

I hope this helps to provide some background. If your developers would like to reach out to discuss our hosting options, then feel free to share this link with them – https://automattic.com/for-agencies/

I hope you find the right solution that works for your project but if we can answer any questions about our hosting then do let us know.
