  Hello,

  I am new to blogging world however planning to buy custom domain

  1. My domain registration – is this 18$ per year or per month? It says year.
  2. What do you get in this?
  3. What the advantages of registering my domain with wordpress and not with external vendor? Just curious – “Map option”
  4. Is it good idea to have the “Privacy protection”
  Any advice on these highly appreciated.

  Hi there.

  Here’s the support article on domain names. It has most of the information you’re asking for.

  Domains

  The cost is annual, not monthly.

  The nice thing about registering your domain here is that everything gets integrated automatically with your site. It’s also likely going to cost you less that registering the domain elsewhere and then paying for mapping too.

  There are pros and cons on private registration. I’ve never bothered with it for my domain names, but perhaps others can explain why it might be desirable.

  Private registration basically hides your name, etc., from information about the domain name in WHOIS listings.

  If you go to http://whois.domaintools.com and put in any domain name, you’ll see the info on that domain.

  If you’re concerned about someone being able to learn personal information about you in a WHOIS lookup, then private registration is good. My own take is that people can get just about as much information from a phone book or from other sources, so it’s never been worth the cost to me.
