My domain expired and I want to renew/redeem it

  • Unknown's avatar

Please can you help me with redeeming my expired domain? I had no idea it expired and the only reason it did is because payment didn’t go through

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

You’re correct – I checked and brightyoungfood.com is now in a redemption period. The charge is a $80 late renewal fee in addition to the $18 we charge to renew the domain. Please confirm here if you agree to pay the fees and I will begin the domain restoration process along with providing a manual payment.

Please visit the support page link for further instructions:

    Domain Expiration

Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. Can I ask – who does the $80 go to? Is it wordpress or some other domain registering service? And how long does this redemption period last? I want to keep my domain, I’m just reluctant to pay $98 as it’s a lot of money.

    Thanks,

    Tasha

  • Hi @njg32 it goes to WWD; we’ve been a reseller with them. We can’t get your domain back without paying the fee. If you contact them, they’ll refer you back to us.

The other option is to allow the redemption process to continue, but it will be several weeks at best. You can read all about redemption here:

    Domain Expiration

Please be mindful that if the domain is backordered, someone else may purchase it, and then you’d be out of luck.

Let us know what you’d like to do.

Hi again, can you not tell me exactly how long the redemption period will go on for this particular domain – i.e. how many days are left until it will go back into a pool to be registered/purchased by anyone? Or do you yourself not know/you don’t have access to that information? Or it’s a random/unknown amount of time for every domain? Thanks

  • It’s not exact, but typically the redemption status lasts around 30 days from the time the domain is removed from our system.

So in your case, you’re almost up on that time. If it’s deleted from their system, you may be able to buy it new at a normal price within the week.

Just be aware that if someone backordered the domain, it will be gone before you can register it.

OK, thanks for all your help. Can you tell me if the redemption period is still going for this domain? Or has it finished?

I appreciate that someone may have backordered it but I can’t decide what to do and am hoping that no one else will want the domain and buy/register it before I can.

  • Hi there,

I just checked and the domain is no longer in redemption status, but rather in pending delete status. That means that we can no longer retrieve the domain and that it will be available pretty soon if it was not picked up by someone else.

I would consistently check the domain status just so that you catch it before anyone else once it is available:

    Thanks,

Hi, thanks for the info and for giving me that link for checking the domain status – I’m monitoring it at the moment and hopefully will be able to snap up my domain before anyone else does. Thanks

Hi again, my domain is now available to buy which is great news. But now I see, having tried to register/buy it with you, that I have to upgrade to a plan with you and pay however much per year in order to be able to register a domain? Can I not just register a domain for $18? I don’t want to pay for an upgrade, I can’t afford it, I just want to buy my domain again as I had it before. Please can you advise and help me on this? I want to buy my domain asap before someone else does. Thanks

If you want to buy the domain to replace a current free site address https://brightyoungfooddotcom.wordpress.com/ or https://brightyoungfooddotcom2.wordpress.com/ then you’ll need to upgrade to a Personal plan at least.

  • Hi there,

We no longer sell domains as stand-alone upgrades on WordPress.com, so there is no way to register that domain with us and use it on your WordPress.com site without buying a paid plan for the WordPress.com site.

If you only want to ensure you have the domain and don’t care about connecting it to your WordPress.com site, I suggest you try registering it through another provider like Namecheap.com or GoDaddy.com.

Thanks for explaining that. Can I also ask (just so I understand how it all works) – if I had paid the $80 to get my domain back while it was in the redemption period, would I then have been able to continue paying $18 per year for just the domain as I have done since 2014? Or would I have had to buy a paid plan for wordpress.com anyway on top of the $80 fee for redeeming the domain? I wish this had all been explained to me from the start so I could have made a more informed decision. A one-off payment of $80 is far better than having to pay at least $60 every year for one of your plans

  • Hi njg32, sites here do require plans. Typically if someone’s domain has gone into redemption, they’re not hosting the site on our servers anymore.
