My editor changed since I pasted writing from Word

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, please help me!
A couple of days ago I pasted my writing from Word to the editor in my wordpress. It posted all right, but ever since, MY EDITOR CHANGED. It doesn’t have those easy buttons anymore, including buttons to change font and colour and to insert image… All I have is a blank editor, without any option to change font, size, color…. I’m confused!!! I miss my easy buttons!
    Please please please, help me.

First off, do not paste from Word as at some point it is going to cause you problems: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/why-not-to-use-word/

Go to users > your profile and make sure that “use visual text editor” is selected.

I have tried it, twice, but it still didn’t work… What should I do next? Now I know not to paste writings (or anything) from Word to my WP editor… And I really miss my old editor! Help me, please…

    PS: Thanks for replying…

What browser and version are you using? It might be related.

In the meantime, maybe you can use Windows Live Writer, which is a free download. People love it and say it works around the recent glitches.

    Hi, raincoaster… Thanks for replying…
    I use Mozilla Firefox… I tried using IE, nothing changed… I haven’t posted anything eversince… I miss it!

Try going to your profile, shutting off your visual editor, saving changes, going back in and turning it on again. Save changes, of course. See if that works. A couple of people have reported this issue now, and it doesn’t appear to be Word that is doing it. But don’t paste from Word: use WindowsLiveWriter instead. It’s free. And it has all those buttons you’re used to, and the uploading works just fine with it.

Mine is whacked too???? Tried all the suggestions. Can anyone help?

Scribefire is an add on for firefox, which allows blogging

Could you be more specific about “whacked?”

I’m finding that editing has become more difficult since you brought the latest version in as well. Despite your recommendation to do otherwise, I use MS Word as the small window in the WordPress editor makes writing ‘online’ difficult and any problems caused by copying and pasting from MS Word is actually the lesser of the two evils. Is it possible to enlarge the window to make it useable?

You are going to run into horrible problems with your blog if you’re pasting from Word unless you’re using the “Publish to blog” option or whatever they’re calling it. Try using Windows Live Writer instead.

You can easily change the size of the post box under Dashboard->Settings->Writing. Just set it to be 40 lines, or 60 or however many you like.

To add to what raincoaster said, you can also expand the size of the post box by dragging your mouse on the bottom right corner of the box while you’re typing an entry.

This sounds like the problem I’ve been having ever since the most recent upgrade.

Using my browser-of-choice (Mozilla 1.7.13), the editing icons are gone from the visual editor – on two separate PCs in two different locations, both using the same browser/version. I’ve tried:
    * Clearing the cache, per the FAQ. No change.
    * Turning the visual editor off in my profile, saving changes, exiting WP, re-entering and turning it back on, as someone suggests here. No change.
    * Double-checking to make sure I don’t have Ad-block installed. (I don’t).

In addition, if I select the “HTML” tab to switch to editing code, the text-entry box disappears entirely and I have to save the post, back out of the editor and come back in to make it visible again.

Ironically (since WordPress boasts that little “BrowseHappy” icon encouraging people to switch from Internet Explorer) I have no such problems in IE. However, I don’t care to use IE.

I can provide screenshots if anyone would like to see them.

I don’t object to the upgrade, or even to the Flash-y changes in the editing page but it’s clear from reading the forums that it broke something in the TinyMCE editor for at least a sizeable number of users. This needs to be fixed.

I don’t know if this means anything, but I administer a half-dozen WordPress.org blogs at work, and our sysadmin upgraded those installations to the latest available version of the server software – with no negative effects on editing functions whatsoever.

Contact staff. Sounds like they need to fix things.

    Thanks, raincoaster, will do.
