My entire draft folder has vanished and isn't in the trash folders.

After logging in to my WordPress site I found my entire drafts folder gone. This is a blog I’m keeping for university so I’ve lost data that I need for my end of year project.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, that was where it should have been, but it wasn’t. I made another draft post to see if it would bring everything back, and while the folder’s back, my work isn’t.
When I opened WP last night what I had was Published and Trash in both the dashboard sidebar and the admin page.

re: locating drafts and post and page revisions

The classic editor retains 25 auto-saved post revisions but the new Beep Beep Boop editor does not. The post revision management system is not built into the new Beep Beep Boop editor, so saving the draft saves only the most recent version, but not previous versions.

In the new Beep Beep Boop editor the most recent version is saved only on your browser, and is not auto-saved to the servers for your blog unless you click the save link once.

If you are using the new Beep Beep Boop editor please read:

Features that won’t be included in the new editor
    Post Revisions
    Copy a Post
    Link back to wp-admin

re: recovering a lost post or page
Please go to https://wordpress.com/post with the same browser and see if it offers to restore a post. If a restore button appears, that means a local copy was saved in your browser and you may be able to recover it.

If the post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Pages > Add New then you ought to be able to recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

See also if applicable > restoring from trash http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

To locate draft POSTS Dashboard > Posts > All Post > Drafts
    http://rhiannondfm2013.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=draft&post_type=post

To locate draft PAGES Dashboard > Pages> All Pages > Drafts
    http://rhiannondfm2013.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=draft&post_type=page

(If you are referring to a Page then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-revisions/)

If you cannot restore from your browser, or locate a revision, or restore from Trash then the content has been lost and cannot be recovered.

    I recommend:

    1. Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
Dashboard > Posts > Add New and pages at Dashboard > Pages > Add New
If you have cookies enabled on your browser your preference will be saved unless or until your clear your cookies, and it will take you to the classic editor automatically every time you create a new post via the drop-down menu in the black admin bar or edit a post via the edit button on the blog itself.

You cannot deactivate the new Beep Beep Boop editor but you do not have to use it. For locating the ways and means of accessing the legacy or classic pages for creating posts, editing posts, and viewing stats see here > Navigating the Classic WordPress.COM interface http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2015/04/05/navigating-the-classic-wordpress-com-interface/

    2. Immediately after creating a post and entering a title click the save draft link. Thereafter, “click save draft” frequently.

    3. Always allow pages to fully load before clicking any other links.

    4. Never leave a post or page open for content creation or editing and walk away from it, or open another tab in the same blog and work on something else while it is still open. Save it properly and return to edit it later.

    5. Use an offline blog editor so you have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

” Immediately after creating a post and entering a title click the save draft link. Thereafter, “click save draft” frequently.”

Please listen to what I’m saying.

    1) I had saved an entry as a draft, then logged out.
    2) When I logged in last night to work on it further the entire draft folder was gone. Not just a post, the entire Drafts folder, with all of my work inside it. It was not in the top menu bar under posts coming in from the dashboard. There was no Drafts option in the admin page. The word “Draft” did not appear anywhere in any of my admin/posting arenas: Screencap
    3) My work that was previously in the Draft folder is not in the trash folder, or anywhere else to be seen.
    4) After creating a test post and saving it as a draft, the Draft folder has reappeared, but my work has not.

I’ve lost a fortnight’s worth of work. Are you able to help me?

    Hi there,

That Drafts link in your WP Admin dashboard will only appear if you have drafts saved on your blog. If you don’t see that link there, it means there aren’t any saved drafts. You can also check all of your drafts in the newer dashboard here:

    https://wordpress.com/posts/drafts

I do see a trashed post dated July 21 in your trash — you mentioned your work isn’t in the trash folder, so just to confirm, that isn’t the draft you mentioned? You can double check all of your trashed posts here:

    https://wordpress.com/posts/trashed

If you created the post in the editor at https://wordpress.com/post you can also revisit that editor to see if the draft was saved there. If it was, you’ll see an option to restore the saved draft when you open that editor.

If none of those options work, please give me more details about the missing draft (anything you can remember, such as the draft’s title or content) and I’ll take another look.

    Hi Rachel

You won’t see a post dated 21st July in the trash because when the trash folder vanished with my saved work in it, the post vanished with it. And before you ask, yes, it was most definitely saved – it came up with the green message box that said “Draft saved – keep going!” so by that reasoning there should have been a draft folder marker in the top menu and my post in that dropdown, correct? And no, the post in the Trashed folder isn’t the one that went missing, that was the first thing I checked.

The title should be something along the lines of “Persian nouns final writeup” and have a proper phonetic table as well as a whole lot of analysis. I still have the raw data as an audio recording so I can re-do the post if need be, but I would like to think that the drafts I have on there aren’t going to up and vanish again.

Also going back over the posts through the /wordpress/posts/ page the last two are showing as being made on the same day (18 days ago) when they were published a fortnight apart. Is there a reason for the time discrepancy?

    Hi there,

I searched for that missing draft you mentioned, and I still wasn’t able to find it. Once a draft is saved it shouldn’t disappear, unless it is trashed. Can you give me more details about when and how you created that draft?

Although I may not be able to recover that draft, I will investigate further to try to find out what happened to it.

Also going back over the posts through the /wordpress/posts/ page the last two are showing as being made on the same day (18 days ago) when they were published a fortnight apart. Is there a reason for the time discrepancy?

I can’t tell by looking at the posts why exactly they have the same publish date, but if you’d like you can open each post in the editor and change the publish date there so it displays the correct date on the post. (The most common reason for a different date on a post is that the date was changed while creating the post, so it was intentionally backdated instead of having the current date when it was published.)
