My Export Won’t Import

    Hello, I successfully exported my drafts from my blog A City Girl’s Thoughts and am trying to import it to this site, abigaelvlhazell.wordpress.com but it’s not working. Do you know why that’s the case?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!
    Can you explain some things so we can understand the issue better?
    Could you share the site you are importing from (A City Girl’s Thoughts)?
    Is it another WordPress.com site or were you using another service?
    Is an error message showing when the import fails?

    Hi there,

    Can you tell us a bit more about the trouble you are having? I do not see that you were able to start an import (it does not show in our error logs) so can you walk us through what you saw? An error message of some kind? What did it say?

    Also it will help if you can tell us more about “A City Girl’s Thoughts” if that is OK. We are not able to look up sites based on their common title but can you let us know the URL of the site so we can take a closer look?

    Yes, A City Girl’s Thoughts is a WordPress site (https://www.acitygirlsthoughts.wordpress.com). When my import finished loading I received an error message saying “Could not upload file. Make sure you are using a valid WordPress export file in XML or ZIP format” even though my import is an XML file.

    Thanks for confirming. I can see that site but it looks like it is under another account. You have more than one account with us, and are trying to consolidate things under this account, yes?

    Out of curiosity, which site are you trying to import that content into? I see you have two on your account but not sure which to check:

    • abigaelvlhazell.wordpress.com
    • abigaelhazell389254938.wordpress.com

    Also, out of curiosity, I’m not sure if you are aware that this is possible, but instead of importing/exporting, you do have the option to transfer acitygirlsthoughts.wordpress.com to this account. This would basically move the blog (as it is now) from one account to the other.

    This would allow you to keep the address acitygirlsthoughts.wordpress.com and not change it. Do you want to consider this? Or do you prefer to move the content to one of your abigaelvlhazell account because you actually want the site to have a new address?

    I’m importing to abigaelvlhazell.wordpress.com. I only want to transfer my drafts; I do want to keep my A City Girl’s Thoughts blog separate from the abovementioned blog and abigaelhazell389254938.wordpress.com.

    Hi there,

    When you exported, did you get a .zip folder, or did you get the .xml file you mentioned above?

    If you got a .zip folder, can you try importing that instead and see if that makes any difference?

    What browser and on what type of device are you trying to do the import? Can you check if using another browser makes any difference?

    A .zip folder but it converts to .xml when I open it to import. I tried using Google Chrome and Samsung Browser on my Samsung tablet but it’s still not working

    Ok, please see if importing the .zip makes a difference.

    That’s what I did. My export downloaded as a .zip, but when I import it it turns into .xml

    Ok, we’re having no issue with importing the file you tried, so you’re right it’s not the file.

    Are you able to try from a desktop or laptop computer?

    Hi @abigaelvlhazell,

    It sounds like the issue is limited to your device. Do you have a friend, relative, library or internet café with a Mac or PC that you can use? Otherwise, have you tried using a different web browser (e.g. Chrome or Firefox)?

    Sadly, no. I already tried Chrome but it still didn’t work. I also tried Samsung Browser but it also didn’t work

    @abigaelvlhazell, this is quite odd. If you export again, and just export all posts, does it make a difference? You could then delete all published posts and publish the drafts if needed.

    Also, just to clarify, have you tried exporting again, or only re-attempted importing with the same file?

    I don’t know, I haven’t tried it. I did export several times the past 2 days but I’ll just copy and paste my drafts manually, since they’re not that large
