My facebook share counter has dropped, twice. Please help me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear support group,

First of all, a big thanx for everything that you are doing, and for helping everyone blog!

I have a problem with the counter of the fb shares in all of my posts. This morning for example, in this post , the fb shares had reached 200 and suddenly droped to 100… :(

This happened to all of my posts…

It has happened to me again, almost two weeks ago.

As I am a new blogger, my fb counter is very important to me, and I like to watch it regularly. I feel very stressed and sad when this particular problem occurs.

Do you think there is a solution? Should I change something? I would appreciate any help.

    Thank you in advance,
    Best Regards,

    Hi there,

As I am a new blogger, my fb counter is very important to me, and I like to watch it regularly. I feel very stressed and sad when this particular problem occurs.

I have blogged for 10 years and do not have or want a Facebook account. Please so not stress out about this.

Be aware that when someone comments on one of your blog posts on Facebook, a share is not recorded on the Facebook button on your blog. The only shares recorded on your blog are those of visitors who clicked into the blog and then clicked the share icon below the post(s).

Also be aware that if your remove the Publicize app and reconnect it then it will take time for the numbers to rectify.

As Volunteers cannot help with social share count issues, I tagged this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

    Hello timethief,

Thank you very much for your reply and your help and advice.

I have subscribed, as you have indicated to the topic. I hope a solution can be found.

I can understand what you mean about not caring about the shares… But I like to see the numbers increase, as it shows that someone likes to read me and in addition shares my article with his friends. However, I will take your advice and try not to stress so much! :)

    Thanx again.

This is an old problem. I thought it was fixed but today, out of the blue, the FB shares on my last 4 blogs were basically cut in half. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/share-buttons-tally-incorrect?replies=28#post-2236171postform

    Hi there,

I’m sorry for the trouble! I checked that post and the share count for Facebook is currently at 239, so it looks like the issue resolved itself. Does that sounds right to you?

We get those share counts directly from Facebook, so it’s possible that there was a temporary glitch with the share count we received from Facebook for your post. Our team has been working on improvements how we get those share counts from Facebook, to try to resolve any glitches like this in the long term. I’m sorry for the ups and downs, but please know that we’re working to smooth that out for you!

I’m having the same problem. Two days ago my last post said it was shared over 80 times on FB. Overnight it dropped to 49. While I was trying to figure that out, I started looking at my older posts and those had either dropped drastically or were zero.

    My blog is http://wedontchewglass.wordpress.com

I guess (according to the last post on this thread) this should just work itself out Rachelmcr?

  • Unknown's avatar

@stephsamess — Sorry for the confusion! It looks like that 80 count was actually the glitch in this case. I checked your post in Facebook’s debugger, and it currently shows 43 likes and 7 shares for your post (so a total of 50).

You can check their debugger and find that sharing count next to the “Canonical URL” link to your post here:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwedontchewglass.wordpress.com%2F2015%2F04%2F23%2Fshit-my-family-says-to-me-part-98%2F

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

That is a real bummer, but thanks for looking into it.

    Dear rachelmcr,

thank you for your reply. I am not sure if it is fixed, in the article article1 because I stopped looking. All the other articles though, are still very lower…

  • Unknown's avatar

Still droping… Is there really no solution? Has anyone solved this, in other cases?

    Thanx.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have read in other post that there was a transition from http to https and that affected the counters.

From now on, will the future shares be affected again, or is the problem solved?

If the problem isn’t yet solved, what is the true solution? To buy a domain name, that does not end to wordpress.com? Can I then easily link it to the same blog or should I buy hosting as well?

  • Unknown's avatar

@theaterproject365 — You mentioned it’s still dropping – can you give a link to a post where it’s still changing?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear rachelmcr,

I am sure that I have seen the following post to over 100 before…
    link

However, I think that your answer “Going forward, Facebook shares will be counted because the URL in the share will be HTTPS. Previous shares to Facebook with the HTTP URL are not recorded.” means that from now on, the problem is solved for the future posts. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

    Hi there,

It’s possible that post briefly showed too many shares, similar to @stephsamess’s post earlier. Facebook made some changes on their end, and our team was making some improvements to how those share counts are displayed, which may have caused a glitch where too many shares appeared.

However, that count on your post is current accurate, according to Facebook’s own sharing count for the post:

    Ο Κόκορας – Εστιατόριο Ριφιφί

That’s different from the HTTP/HTTPS sharing counts you mentioned. That could happen for much older posts on your blog that used to have an HTTP URL, but in recent months your posts always had an HTTPS URL so the Facebook count includes all of your post’s shares.

This information is really helpful. My Facebook count drops also, and then restores itself sometimes on my About page. Right now it only shows one share.

But I have a question about share count in general. When I post a new article, the admin page says that many more people are viewing it on social media pages such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter. But it only shows one or a few shares (on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter). Is this because they click on the interface? It seems like other blogs show the count number every time someone reads their article.

I would really appreciate your help with this!

    Thank you so much!

The blog I need help with is zinahermez.wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

@zinahermez — When you saw that the admin page says that people are viewing it on social media pages, do you mean your WordPress.com stats show referrers from those social media sites?

The sharing buttons will only count when someone shares the article to their own social media page, not when they read the article or click a link from one of those social media pages.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, what I mean is–when I log into sites like LinkedIn I can see how many people have viewed/read it. And it is more than just one or two people. I understand what you are saying about the share buttons.

But did something change? It seems like before on wordpress, the share count showed just how many people read your article. I have a hard time believing that 90 people or 100 people actually SHARED my articles on some previous posts that I have. Do you know what I mean?

    Appreciate your help with this!:)

  • Unknown's avatar

The sharing buttons here at WordPress.com report how many people have actually shared the article, not how many people have read it. We get those sharing counts from the social media services themselves, so the only way that might have changed is if the social media services changed how they count shares — but as far as I know they never showed how many people read each article.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, thank you so much for your helpful feedback.:)

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi rachelmcr and zinahermez. Now I’m confused again. Above, I understood that you were saying the sharing button on my blog showed the number of shares to facebook AND the number of likes on FB. I think it was 47 likes and 2 shares for a total of 49 showing on the share button? But I see that in response to zinahermez you stated that the share buttons only show how many people have actually shared the article. So…I’m totally lost, lol.
