My facebook share counter has dropped, twice. Please help me.

@stephsamess — Facebook’s sharing button is a bit different from other social media services, in that it shows Facebook likes and shares (both). However, the sharing buttons won’t show if someone just read the post, without sharing or liking it, which is what zinahermez was asking about.

Oh! Sorry I made a mistake. That is what I meant. For example, the last several posts show only one like or two at the most on Facebook, and on average I am getting 13 or 14 likes. Even if I get only 5 it shows only 1. It shows 4 likes on the linkedin button when only one person liked. The same with twitter, it always shows only one. It used to show 51 on my about page for Facebook and now it shows 1. Could you help me with this?? I would greatly appreciate it!

@zinahermez — Ah, thanks for clarifying that. Can you give me the link to a post where you’re seeing a sharing count that you don’t expect, and explain what numbers you expect to see there? I can then take a closer look at that for you.

Oh, yes! Thank you so much! My most recent blog post, Stop pointing fingers https://zinahermez.wordpress.com/2015/05/10/stop-pointing-fingers/ has 10 likes and one share on Facebook. It does not show anything. I hope this is helpful, please let me know if you need any other information. Thanks so much for your help with this!

@zinahermez — I checked Facebook’s debugger, and it doesn’t show any shares or likes:
The number of shares and likes next to “Canonical URL” there is the number that Facebook gives WordPress.com to show on your blog. If the shares and likes aren’t counted there, they won’t appear on your blog.

Ok, thank you for the link I will look into that. I really don’t know what that word means, “canonical URL.”
When I first started the blog a few years ago the likes and shares worked just fine. I got up to around a 100 likes/shares on a Facebook post before and they all showed.
Oh well, I have disabled the sharing feature right now. I will try to figure it out in case I want to share future posts. When I went to the Publicize feature everything changed. As soon as I publicized, I stopped seeing the accurate numbers of likes and shares. But I really like to publicize so I want to keep that feature.
The other thing I notice, is Publicize counts your number of followers from other social media sites not only your WordPress site, but those people didn’t deliberately hit the follow button so I disabled the number of followers (from showing) as well.
Thank you so much for your help! I will try to figure out why my likes/shares don’t show in case I want to show the share buttons on future posts.
Thank you!!!
