My first website – new to this

    I registered a URL with GoDaddy just yesterday – want to get started with the site design and content. Can I wait and transfer or connect the URL later?

    I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

    Where do you want to get started? Here at WordPress.com or at Godaddy? If you want to build a site here you would have been able to register your domain free for the first year by purchasing a paid plan. To use your new domain with a site here at WordPress.com then you’ll still need to buy a plan and then you can connect your domain.

    Yes you can start off with a free site here with an adress ending in wordpresss.com and connect or transfer your domain later by upgrading the free site to a paid one.

    A different one. My associate built that site.
    I want to do a site for a friend of mine who recently passed away. He was a prolific artist and photographer – so I have a lot of images and memes he created I want to share. I also want the site to allow open ended commentary and testimonials from people that knew him and can share their own memories to help fill in the blanks of his life. I did something similar for another friend (with some help) – that one is gaborszalontay.com.

    Ah yes, you can definitely build something like that here, and you certainly can get your site set up here before switching your domain over. :)

    When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.

    Here’s a guide that will help you migrate your site to WordPress.com:

    Thanks so much.
    The personal one ($4/mo. or $48 annual) will work fine – not really looking to monetize this and would like to keep costs down.
    It’s a cloud based memorial (and don’t want to use Facebook or Instagram).
    I already grabbed the URL I want prior to coming to WordPress – so will just transfer over once I have something built.
    Is that when I start paying? I’m fine with signing up first if that’s how it works.

    You can start building the site now, for free. At the point where you want to use your custom domain (the one from GoDaddy) as your primary domain is when you would need to pay for that upgrade.
