My header drop-down menu has been replaced by a static link under wrong title

Trying to figure out how and why suddenly today my header drop-down menu has been replaced by a static link under the wrong title. The header menu normally includes a link to the homepage, and a link to the page “page index (796)” (https://songbook1.wordpress.com/fx/), which is the parent of all of the other pages, as can be seen in the shortcode display of the page hierarchy in the page content. Hovering over it should open a drop-down menu displaying the 796* published pages of the website. I’ve used various drop-down menus on this website, with the present theme, for years. It was working properly last night.

The following characteristics of the header menu suggest that the default menu has been replaced by a custom menu:

    1. The default “Home” link is absent.
    2. The title of the parent page in the menu has been changed to “Page Index,” which
    3. No drop-down menu stems from the parent page.

However, I have not activated a custom menu.

In an attempt to reset site to display the default menu, I deleted the custom menu (previously titled “Complete Page Index” **) which was being displayed as if I’d set it to “primary navigation.” This didn’t correct the problem. Instead a different custom menu was automatically, perhaps randomly, chosen to replace it. So I recreated the deleted custom menu, without activating it, and the menu was replaced again, but this time a third custom menu was, randomly or otherwise, automatically selected to display in the header navigation menu area.

Again, I have set no custom menu to display today and have seen three different custom menus display, either randomly or automatically by some other unknown process. The website is set to display the default page menu, and that is what I would like it to do.

    * The number of pages fluctuates, and therefore so does the page title.
** After deleting it and recreating it, I retitled the custom menu item from “Complete Page Index,” to “Page Index.”

I was able to correct the issue going to “Manage Locations” at the Menus page, and changing the option to “Select a Menu.” I still believe that this a bug, because I’ve activated various menus on this site dozens of times previously, and the site has always until now reverted to the default page menu when I uncheck the box “Primary navigation” at Edit Menus > Menu Structure > Menu Settings > Theme Locations. Today, for the first time that doesn’t work.

Hi @musicdoc1: I’m glad to see that you were able to resolve this issue.

You’re right that a Custom Menu must have been assigned to your theme’s Primary Navigation. Unchecking the Primary Navigation box under Menu Settings should have resolved this and I’m unsure why it didn’t in this case. From my own testing, I was unable to replicate the issue and so am putting this down as an edge case. If you’re able to replicate again then please do let me know and I’ll investigate further.

    @ siobhyb,

Thanks. I don’t want a custom menu on this website, so I won’t be demonstrating it here. However, I’ll try to find some time to replicate the issue on a test website with the same theme activated.

Thank you @musicdoc1. If you’re able to replicate the issue, please do let me know the steps and I’ll try to help out.
