My hit counter doesnt always match notifications.

I’ve noticed that when I get notifications of a “like”, comment or new follower, my hit counter and number of visitors on my stats doesn’t always reflect them, or at least not right away. Is the hit counter and stats only updated periodically or can people read and interact with posts in ways that don’t always count as a hit?

It’s not a crisis level problem, but being a new blogger, I’m obsessing over new traffic and like to see the stats and counter go up.

    Hello there!

This is a great question. The hit counter on your stats page won’t always reflect the amount of likes you have…or even all your new followers. “Why?” You might ask. Many people who follow your site might look at it in their Reader. In the Reader, they have the ability to Like or Follow your site, without actually ever having to visit the site itself.

Additionally, you are correct — the numbers do take a bit of time to synch, as well.

It’s not a crisis level problem, but being a new blogger, I’m obsessing over new traffic and like to see the stats and counter go up.

I don’t blame you :) Of course you want your blog to be read! Just know that only an actual visit to your site counts as a hit. And because people like to have options about how they read blogs — for instance, some read many blogs a day, so they subscribe to them and read a digest of posts in an RSS Feed reader — we want to give these options to your prospective readers.

I hope this answers your questions. Please let us know if you have any other concerns. Thanks much!
