My introduction to WordPress so far has not been a good one

Hi why is it so hard to get started with creating a website using WordPress. Nothing is simple. The instructions on the videos don’t match the installed program and when I click on what I think is the replacement for what is in the videos, it is completely different. Can I just start a website from scratch without going via a theme? Most of what is available doesn’t suit and everything seems hidden in behind something else and then there are so many hidden costs with each widget or whatever the cost of making the website is never ending. It is most frustrating. The instructions tell you to click such and such a button but it is not there when you go back to the dashboard. Does anyone have some simple instructions on how to get started because even what is on the WordPress site doesn’t match what is on my dashboard?

    Hi there,

What’s the URL of your website? I have a feeling you might be confusing self-hosted WordPress and WordPress.com based on your description of the editors, which is a pretty common mistake to make! https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The support documentation on WordPress.com is primarily regarding the Calypso interface. You can access most of that on your self-hosted site with Jetpack (a plugin), but it’s not really applicable to self-hosted blogs. The rest of the documentation is purely for WordPress.com blogs only. https://jetpack.com

Self-hosted WordPress help can be found here: https://wordpress.org/support/

Let us know your URL and we’ll try to help. :)

    Hi torres126

I am just getting GoHosting to delete the installation and redo it from scratch as I downloaded Gutenberg thinking it would be better but it just made things worse. They have installed WordPress on their server so not sure if such an installation is called self-hosted.

The URL is http://divinedesignedproducts.com.au. Not sure there will be anything there, depends on how the hosting guy goes.

Thanks for responding though, much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hi Philip,

Yes, it appears that your website uses the self-hosted version of WordPress rather than WordPress.com, which is what this forum is designed to help with. That may explain the difference in documentation if you were referring to support documents on WordPress.com. Note the difference here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You may be able to find help here: https://wordpress.org/support/ or alternatively contact your hosting provider.

    Best wishes. :)

Hi why is it so hard to get started with creating a website using WordPress.

Getting started on WordPress.com takes literally seconds. However you have opted for a site using the WordPress.org software, which, being infinitely customizable can be called the “advanced” version of WordPress.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Hmm they didn’t put that in the advertising. Thank torres126. I will see if that can be corrected.

In your opinion is it best to download the program onto one’s own computer and do it that way or go directly to WordPress.com? Are there additional fees associated with the latter?

    Cheers

Hey thanks for that, seems I may have not been given all the right information regarding the hosting. I will follow up with my provider see what they have to say.

    Cheers

    Hi,

It really depends on the person, both are good. My judgement has always been that self-hosted WordPress offers more flexibility (unless you have the Business Plan on WordPress.com, but that’s fairly expensive), but at a cost of more responsibility and complication. However, different people will prefer different options. In terms of which is more simple to get started, I’d recommend WordPress.com.

In terms of pricing: anyone can start a perfectly functioning site for free on WordPress.com, but there’s a choice of three paid plans which offer more features. You can compare them here: https://wordpress.com/pricing

Let us know if you have any further questions or issues. :)
