My Invited Contributors can't join private web site

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m a newbie with a private web site on Word Press. My Invited Contributors are having trouble joining my web site. Please tell me the steps that they need to do in order to join so I can repeat the steps to them. So far I have told them to click on the ACCEPT INVITATION, register with email address, user name, & password. Go back to their email for a CONFIRM email. Go back to original email & ACCEPT INVITATION which should take them to my web site. Then to view my home page: click on ‘My Site’ , drop down list ‘Stats’, & then the little house ‘Visit’ appears above Stats so they can ‘Visit’ the web site. What am I missing? 95% are having problems!

I will post the whole process below and hopefully it will help you.

You can have either a public or a private WordPress.COM hosted blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. Contributors cannot upload images. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.

To change blog visibility to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings

    Then see:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-users-to-your-site
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-viewers-to-a-private-site

The invitees will have to register a WordPress.COM username account which requires an email address only, but does not need to register a blog. That requirement is because the software has to be able to differentiate between hackers and official users and allow access only to those with username accounts and official roles on the blog.

Username accounts are required but registering blogs under them is not required.

If the person being invited to contribute to your blog does not already have one, he or she will have to register a WordPress.COM username account. He or she does not need to register a blog. There is a just a username please option. The invitees who lack username accounts select the “username only” option here: https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1

NOTE that as you have an account you would have to log out and clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies to witness the process as the invitees without accounts would experience it.

Upon receipt of the invitation, the invitee will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If the invitee is logged into their WordPress.com username account, he or she will be taken directly to your blog. If not, he or she will be taken to the log-in screen, where he or she can either log in, or can register a new WordPress.COM user account.

Note that invitees who do create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

Lastly, there is a built-in spammer prevention so send out only 10 invitations at one point in time and then wait and manage those before sending out 10 more.

Thanks timethief, I missed, select the “username only” option. Once in my web site, will they see the home page or do they need to take the steps I take which I’m not sure is the easiest way, MY SITE, STATS, VISIT?

I missed, select the “username only” option

    Aha! That’s important.

I don’t have an answer to your last question. To get one from Staff type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread. I’m not sure I understand the question. If they are attempting to view the site in question, they can just enter the URL into their browser once they have joined the site.

Ok, I went to a friends house today to see the steps it takes to register & join my private web site as an invited Contributor. When she clicked on the ‘Accept Invitation’ from my email it took her to WordPress & it was about registering for a blog. We went back again to my invitation & click on ‘Accept Invitation’ a 2nd time before it popped up to register as an invited contributor? I think this is why my invited Contributors are confused. Once inside the web site she could see the home page.

  • The people you have invited will need a WordPress.com account in order to be successfully invited to a private site. There is no other way for the system to know who to allow in.

They also need to be logged into their WordPress.com account prior to clicking the link.

Thanks for confirming that what I posted above is correct.

  • You were correct. For whatever reason, sometimes a repetition from staff helps clear things up.

I would encourage you to add the “They also need to be logged into their WordPress.com account prior to clicking the link.” bit to your standard response. It tends to make the process a lot easier.

Okay. I’ll endeavor to remember to add that sentence.

It is still discouraging that my ‘invited Contributors’ can not register at WordPress.com. It should not be that difficult. When they click on step 1 within their invited Contributor email that I send them, they are sent to WordPress.com & asked to register and start a Blog or Website. Their is no where for them to click on ‘User Only’ to register nor does the register page that says ‘lets get started’ pop up. Why doesn’t the right page to register pop up????

  • @mhs1961,

They can register WordPress.com before clicking on the link in the contributor e-mail:

    http://wordpress.com/start

I just tested accepting an invite on another site with an already created WordPress.com account and had no problems. Tell them to try creating their account first and let me know if they have any success.

The problem is trying to get registered. The right registration window doesn’t pop up. They don’t want to create a Blog nor Website & that is what pops up. They only want to register as User Only & they can’t find that window.
