my invited friends cannot join~ why?

My friends say the site is telling them that their email address is wrong when they try to add themselves as invited contributors. I did everything to add a non member to my blog. Thanks,

Do your friends already have a WordPress.com account?
Please have a look at this support document about how to proceed to add users to your blog, if they already have or don’t have yet a WordPress.com account.

I looked at everything, just cannot figure out how to get a user only account without the blog because they don’t want to do that.
the support document says:
“Type their WordPress.com username (just username, not username.wordpress.com) in the box and click “Add User.”If this person does not have a WordPress.com account and does not want their own blog, they can select “sign up for just a username” when they register.”The above part is the part where I do not see a “just sign up for a username” choice anywhere. Not saying it isn’t there. I just cannot see it for the life of me

You can direct your friends to sign up for just a username here. That link is to the form for just a username.
On the regular form there is a “Sign up for just a username” link to the bottom right of the username field.

Hooray! Thanks a gazillion. It only works properly if you are not signed in as a current user.
