My iPhone stopped letting me log in to my WordPress app — how can I fix it?

Hi, WordPress folks. I’ve been using WordPress (very happily! it rocks!) for a few months on both laptops (first PC, then Mac) and on my iPhone. It has all worked beautifully. Yesterday I started having trouble logging in on the phone, and tried a few things in response to suggestions I read in help forums online…I restarted the phone; deleted and re-installed the app; tried logging off my account on the laptop in case there was some bizarre new problem of duplication. Nothing works. The screen I get is the initial login screen and it just says “sign-in failed.” But I KNOW it works (and that the username and password are right), because I’m able to go in and out of my account on the laptop (and see everything). Any advice?
(On one occasion on the iPhone and one occasion on the laptop, when I tried to come at WordPress from another angle, maybe WordPress for iOS, it said my username did not exist, but when I went back to it on the laptop, it was fine. In fact, it told me my username did not exist when I was logged in in another window!) All advice welcomed. Thank you! – Anna Bartel -
Sorry you’re having problems logging in! What version of iOS and model of iPhone are you using?
Can you try syncing your phone with iTunes to generate a backup – perhaps there’s something still sticking around causing the login issue. After you make the backup, restart your iPhone and try again. If you still get the failure error, please take a screenshot (hold the menu button and power button down until you hear it take the screencap) and upload it to your media library. You may need to email the image to yourself and upload it via your computer.

Thanks, csonnek. I deleted the WP app completely, backed up my phone and updated my iOS. (I had already tried turning off the phone and deleting and reinstalling the app to no avail, so I thought maybe iOS problem.) No better now. It just tells me very plainly that “sign-in failed” on the WP login page. But I know I have the right info because I use it on my Mac just fine. Any other ideas? Oh, and my phone is 4s. Thanks for all your help!

I think I might have figured out the problem!
It looks like you might need to reauthorize the iOS app in your settings here:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-applications/To do this, open the application on your iPhone and in Settings, swipe your finger from left to right over the title of the blog. A “Remove” button will then appear. Tap “Remove” to remove the blog. Then try to add it again using your login credentials.

This sounds promising! But I just reinstalled the app and it won’t let me any farther than the “register your blog” page, because it still says sign-in failed when I try to register. No settings option appears to be available. Sigh. Other thoughts?

Can you verify whether or not you’re on iOS 5? If so, what version?
I’ll need to have our app developers take a look into why this is happening and I’ll get back to you once I have more information.

Thank YOU for being so committed to trying to solve this! And the iOS version thing is tricky: I was on some version of 5 when it started, and I updated to 6.1.3 as one of my efforts to solve it. So that’s where I am now, totally stalled. I’m sure that ought to teach me a lesson of some kind… :)

I had another idea: are you choosing the “Add WordPress.com blog” when you try to login? You would only need to sign in using your username and password and not need to enter a blog name.
If that is what you’ve been trying, can you write back with the detailed step-by-step of what you’re doing from opening the app up to the point where you get the error. Our mobile app developers will need that information if they need to look into this issue.

Thanks, csonnek. I am doing exactly what you describe — I open the app, choose “Add WordPress.com blog” and then enter my username and password. And it says “sign-in failed.” Once I tried entering my blog name as a self-hosted site (which it’s not) just to see what would happen, and I did get a little further — to a screen that did actually have a settings option, but I couldn’t figure out what to do from there (just tried it again with same results). And besides, I assume that that’s not a viable solution because I AM WP hosted. But it also wouldn’t let me sign in from there, either. So there we are. Let me know if I can offer any other info! And thanks again…it’s so much better knowing I’ve got a smart partner at the other end of this trying to figure it out!

Ok – I heard back from the developers and they would like you to try these steps:
- Upgrade the app to 3.5.2 (if you haven’t already)
- Start the app and try to add the blog
- Send us the app log file. Instructions on how to get the log file from your iDevice here : http://wpiphonedev.wordpress.com/extra-debug/
Upload the file to your site’s media library. If you are unable to do so, let me know and I’ll contact you via email and you can send it that way.
