My localhost site is different from my WordPress site!!!

When signing up for wordpress, I also purchased a domain name – http://www.independentposts.com – which I intended would immediately apply to my site.

Next, I downloaded wordpress through MAMP with the following url:
    http://localhost:8888/wordpress/

I made all my customizations in the local server, and I’m now ready to transfer to a commercial server only to realize that the changes I made did not reflect on the website with my domain name.

My question is, if I go ahead and switch to another server, which of the two sites will I be transferring? It’s the one on localhost I want to transfer, since the site with my domain name is flat, but I want the transferred site to have my domain name. Would it be better, then, to first change the domain of the localhost to my domain name before doing the transfer? If yes, how do I do that?

I’ve read through all the guides about transferring one’s site and changing one’s url, but they all confusing.

    Thank you!

  • Hi there. You are dealing with two different versions of WordPress.

Your domain, http://independentposts.com/, is currently mapped to a free WordPress.com blog. There is no way to work offline with a WordPress.com site, we don’t have any FTP access and can’t install plugins or custom themes. You can customise existing themes, but that requires a paid upgrade.

The WordPress software you downloaded and have been working on offline is the self-hosted version, WordPress.org. While there are similarities it works completely differently from WordPress.com.

See here for more on the difference: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you want to use WordPress.com then I’m afraid you’ve wasted your time with the localhost site. You might be able to export your content (posts and pages) and import it to the WordPress.com site, but your theme along with any customisations and menus you’ll have to set up again. The instructions for importing can be found at the following link, but I really don’t know if it works with MAMP sites, so you might have to do everything over on WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/

If you want a self-hosted site you’ll need to get a hosting account at the hosting provider of your choice (some options can be found here http://wordpress.org/hosting/). Then you need to transfer/map your domain to that hosting account (https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/). Once that is done, you should be able to import your localhost site to your domain, but you’ll have to consult the WordPress.org support pages and forums for help with that. http://wordpress.org/support/

Is it too late to switch to the self-hosted wordpress.org? That’s what I actually wanted. I wasn’t aware of the differences. Thanks again!

  • Not at all. The WordPress.com site is set to private, so just leave it. You can periodically import content from your self-hosted site to the WordPress.com site as an extra backup, or you can just ignore it.

As for your domain, see the instructions I linked above for moving it to your own hosting account. If it has been fewer than 60 days since you bought it, I don’t think you’ll be able to transfer it completely, but you can change the name servers to your new host’s. You’ll have to ask whoever is hosting you what the name servers should be.

But why doesnt the sign up page just simply spell the difference between the two sites? If one tries to sign up, all one sees is wordpress.com. There’s no mention of wordpress.org.

I’m sick and tired of wordpress acting like google; I cant even delete my site!!! What should be a simple process, they are making it so complicated!

The link I gave you above about the difference between the two can be found on the very first page of the support section, here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/

You can’t delete your site as you have an active domain upgrade on it. If you delete your site you’ll have no way to manage your domain. Once you transfer your custom domain to another registrar you’ll be able to delete your blog. But as I said above, that’s not necessary. Your site is private, so no one can see it and it will not be indexed by search engines.
