My own comment in my blog was marked as spam

  • Unknown's avatar

As the title says. I was adding to a comment (with two links in it) in my blog, and the comment didn’t show up. I tried to re-posti it, but I got a message that I was posting a duplicate. This comment didn’t show up neither in Comments nor in My Comments. I had almost given up until I finally found my comment in Akismet spam filter.

How to prevent my own comments getting caought by Akismet?

Just go in to Akismet and mark it “not spam”. This sometimes happens, usually when Akismet has tightened things up OR when you put a whole lot of links in a comment when your’e not signed in. Just un-spam yourself a few times and it should learn.

It was the “2 links” which got it flagged. You can adjust the number, but the default is 2. As raincoaster says, un-spam it a few times. Another option is to set it to “needs to have previously allowed post”….which should let it through anyway.

I turned that off because of the sneaky spamming techniques of a “nice blog” style comment to be accepted, followed by a flood of spam which is pre-allowed.

It was the “2 links” which got it flagged

I don’t think so. That would drop it into the Moderation queue, not Akismet.

A quick looksee at the poster’s IP address does show some issues coming out of that Class C though but not her IP address within my own router logs as well as a quick Google search. Again, those are my records, not Akismets. That may be the reason though.

Yes, I also thought that 2+ links would put it on moderation not Akismet. Yet my main issue was that I was logged in when making the comment.

As for the IP, it was marked up the same as always.

I did un-spam the comment, but I had a tough time figuring out what happened to it in the first place. My next comment went through though, so the problem is solved (for now). I was just wondering how to prevent that in the future.

It happens even if you’re logged in; this happens sometimes, and it is MUCH more likely to happen when you put links in the comment. All you can do is un-spam it. After awhile you get used to looking for it in Spam.

  • Unknown's avatar

Got a link to a comment that was tagged as spam? We might see something that maybe causing the issue.

And, again, it may be IP related.

  • Unknown's avatar

This just happened to me for the second time today, while adding a comment to my own blog. My comment didn’t even have a link, and it was still marked as spam!

  • Unknown's avatar

Did you mark it and pull it out of the spam bin? Like raincoaster says above: All you can do is un-spam it.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s probably your “ISP” (Please note the quotes) They have a history of being a tad loose on their IT security. Not sure if this is what’s causing the issue and Akismet is scoring based on that but I know I’ve seen issues on my own boxes.

As TT suggests, all you can do is mark it as not being spam and maybe complain to your IT department and their lack of responses and follow up dealing with abuse complaints.

edit: And if Dirk sees this, this is probably why Automattic doesn’t flat out block IP addresses.

  • Unknown's avatar

Timethief: Yes, I un-spammed it. Hope Akismet learns to tell the difference soon.

DrMike: IIRC I’ve had this problem both at home and at work –with two different ISPs and IP addresses. I’ll chip in again if I find more.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve had the same problem with all my own comments, but not anyone else’s, for the past several days. Also from two different ISP’s, one from a university and the other from home. So, it does not appear to be ISP-related–is there a glitch in Akismet?

  • Unknown's avatar

catenary, if your second post is from your home account, they’ve even worse than the first one. For example their responses from email spam is to tell the complainer to unsubscribe which does nothing but confirm that it’s a working account.

Best bet would be continue marking them as not being spam but feel free to submit a feedback and provide links directly to the comments that were marked as spam.

So, it does not appear to be ISP-related

SP, the network you’re posting from leases lines (T1s and above) directly to spammers, their own routers are open for relaying, and bin complaints when their users cause problems elsewhere. Heck, they run filtering on their own abuse box so complaints get bounced back. I won’t even except mail from them on my own boxes.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks DrMike. I’ll submit a feedback if this becomes annoying.

My worry now is that my posts to other WordPress blogs will also be flagged as spam, or that other legitimate posters to my blog will be flagged too. I’d learned to trust Akismet and forget about spam, but if it’s as aggressive on “normal” ISPs (I’m with one of Canada’s largest) as it seems, I should be checking my spam folder often, and asking friends to do the same.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, your comments will ALL be marked as Spam until Akismet learns that you’re not spam. What I do when that happens is comment on my own blog repeatedly, unspamming myself each time and NOT commenting on other blogs until at least one of my comments goes throught without getting labelled Spam. It doesn’t matter what computer you’re using: once you’ve been Spammed, you’ll always be considered Spam until you train Akismet otherwise.

  • Unknown's avatar

DrMike, I hate to keep pushing this, but I’m pretty the ISP is not the issue here. I’ve done further testing: at work (major university IP, I’m sure they’re not leasing out T1 lines), my comments are put in the spam bin if I am logged into WordPress, or if I am logged out and submit a comment using the name with which I usually post. But, if I am logged out and use a different name, with the same email address, comments go through just fine.

  • Unknown's avatar

Actually, quite a lot of spam comes out of universities. You’d be amazed.

  • Unknown's avatar

Unfortunely the only folks who will be able to help you is staff so I would suggest doing what we suggest and tagging anything marked incorrectly correctly and maybe also submitting a feedback and let staff know that you’re having an issue and point very specifically to comments that got tagged as such.

When I said you’re ISP, I meant Earthlink, not the university. But considering, as Rain says, a lot of school are overlooking their spam and abuse issues, some with a “We can’t be doing it” attitude.

Best bet would be to keep marking it and send in the feedback with specifics.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve had this problem too both on my own blog here at wordpress.com and on another blog that uses wordpress.org software and Akismet. Training Akismet has helped, but even now when I post a comment that has a lot of HTML markup in it (even with no links) it sometimes gets marked as spam.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ha , Found someone in the same shoes as me , my case is alittle bit different , Akismet seems to hate me so much that my comments don’t even appear on my friend’s blogs , I’v asked them to help me un-check them but it sorta defeats the purpose of having a comment system if this is the case , maybe there should be a safe list for Akismet or something . Just my two irritated cents worth.
