My own domain with free wordpress blog?

  I have a little trouble figuring out if I can connect my own domain name, to the free plan of a wordpress blog? Under plans in my account it seems like I have to upgrade to get my own domain name, but researching on the net it seems like I can actually connect my own domain name to the free wordpress blog. Can anybody help me what is possible with a free wordpress blog regarding having my own domain on it? Thank you

  Yes, you can use a domain registered elsewhere with a free WordPress.com blog. There are two steps involved: 1) set up domain mapping on WordPress.com to point to your content and 2) change the name servers at the registrar where you purchased the domain.   Once you’ve made the changes, it may take up to 72 hours for them to fully spread around the internet. During that time your domain name may become temporarily inaccessible.
