My own visits ARE counting

  • Unknown's avatar

While this didn’t used to be a problem, I’m noticing that my own visits to my blog are counting in the stats. I can see the number with “WordPress dashboard” as a referrer. Has something changed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I should have added that although the WP nav bar (My Account, etc.) does show when I’m on my dashboard it does NOT show up (any more) when I go to my blog as it used to. Using fully up to date Firefox and this was an issue even before the update to 3.0.7

Why isn’t this question being answered? I have the same problem. I feel I no longer have any sense of how many views my blog is getting, because when I’m logged in and working on it, my stats balloon up.

This is more a question for Support Staff than a forum thing… give them a call, they’re very nice people and happiness is their reward.

WordPress Dashboard as a referrer is NOT you but rather someone else.

For example in your dashboard you have incoming links on the main dashboard page. If another blog links to you and you click that link in your dashboard to look at their post, they will see WordPress Dashboard in their referrals.

feartheseeds, thanks. I did contact support, and they told me, “Please don’t worry, your stats will not include your views whilst you are logged in.” But I just spent about an hour updating several of my posts, and when I was done there were 20 new “views.” I’d only been getting a few a day. Same thing happened a few days ago when I got a spike of 70 or 80 “views” immediately after working on the posts for a couple of hours. I know this is minor compared to the great convenience and affordability (to say the least!) of WordPress; it’s just kind of frustrating.

  • if you’re not seeing an admin bar on the front page of your blog when you’re logged in, you might have a cookie problem. If logging out doesn’t solve it, try clearing your wordpress.com cookies.

Thanks for your response. I do see an admin bar, but I cleared the cookies anyway. Then I visited my site (logged in) and hopped around a few times. Now I’ll see if the stats go up a bunch.

I just checked again, and I suddenly have 32 more views. Believe me, I don’t have that kind of readership!

I have the same problem with WordPress counting my visits. They know about the problem. For me, it started after an upgrade they did about three months ago. I told them how I know and the response was “gee, maybe so”. I don’t think it’s a priority for WordPress, since it likes inflated numbers.

I have never noticed my own visits count. Are you sure you were logged in at the time, truthonsoares?

  • Unknown's avatar

It counts me logging in as a visit. Given the number of visits to my site, it is easy to check.

  • Unknown's avatar

how are you logging in? If you’re logging in by clicking on the meta widget then I think that would be counted as a hit on your blog since you were technically still logged out when you click on a link to log you in

  • Unknown's avatar

No. When I was in contact with support, I was directed to an administrative log in, but the problem didn’t go away. I always sign in that way and it still counts me. It wasn’t always like this, with a couple years experience with WordPress.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just confirmed this problem again.

  • Unknown's avatar

FYI, it’s happened all day long. Always increasing by one every time I sign in.

It did no good to tell WordPress support a few months ago. They know about the problem, and apparently like the inflated numbers it provides.

WordPress.com support is aware of the issue, as you’ve stated. Several other threads on the issue have been posted in the last couple of days. Continually posting to the forums is not going to solve the problem.

I could be wrong, but I think the threads you are referring to are about something else with stats — all the testing they are doing, that make stats fluctuate.
