My page ‘edit’ won’t stay the way I want it.
-
My blog is http://smokinchoices.wordpress.com and the page on the blog which represents what the blog is about “Anybody Can Quit Smoking” is rather long. (It was 8 typewritten pages when I first wrote it, with each page numbered). The page numbers disappeared. I can live with that, tho it served a purpose to have the numbers. I have edited them back in and they keep disappearing, so I accept that WP doesn’t want them there. But the spacing of the appearance of the page is continually scrunching up til it looks ridiculous. I keep editing it to put space back in between sections and steps – this is a teaching or how-to thing and it should have a certain aesthetic appeal as well as the words involved. Is there a special tool or technique to edit this page. I do save it each time after the edit and it looks acceptable on the edit page, then when I view the site, it is back to the scrunched up bunched-up appearance. Help! a page,

You appear to be pasting in from Word or some other document. Don’t do it; it will completely screw up your blog at some point. We’ve seen it so many times.
The way to get spacing to hold is to do it via HTML in the Code editor. The minute you click over there you’ll see all kinds of crazy code that Word has added to your page. It’s probably best to copy the text, delete the page, and then paste it in without any formatting; you do this by pasting it into Notepad or Wordpad using Paste Special->Remove Formatting. Then, copy that and paste that copy into the blog.
THEN you format it.

This doesn’t apply much to the editing, but if you want to separate the really long pages into subpages, check out http://faq.wordpress.com/2008/05/27/next-page/

I also suggested to someone the other day to use sub-headings and separate sections with those old-fashioned icons, like in Victorian books. I believe http://drboli.wordpress.com does something like this, and it looks very good.

Thank you both so much, I am overjoyed to have an answer, tho of course, its not the answer wanted – better a magic button. And of course, you are totally correct, I had written this in Word and somehow, my granddaughter imported it over for me. I have never used notepad or wordpad unless it is something I already have (and don’t know it). So I guess I better start from scratch the old fashioned way. Tedious, but it works. One question 1) Rainoaster, you say the way to get spacing to hold is to do it in HTML. The whole thing or just when I want to space down a certain line or four? (rather like using the shift key to capitalize a letter?) Many thanks to you both.

If you write in Word but make sure you copy into the HTML editor (not the Visual editor) that should strip out all the formatting for you. Then you can switch to the Visual editor to put back whatever you need (italics, bold, etc.)
-
My recommendation is to get the content in, then format as much as you like on the Visual side and only click over to the HTML view at the very end, when you are going to put in the spacing. Then click Publish WITHOUT clicking back to the Visual editor. I have better luck that way. Somehow going back to the Visual editor seems to wipe out the edits I made in the HTML editor.

Rosclarke and Raincoaster, thank you both, I am indebted to you. You have given me options which don’t sound too intimidating. I shall immediately start experimenting.
What’s the worst thing that could happen? (You’d know that is a joke if you had read my latest post on a computer fix). Thanks again. Hope I don’t have to bother you again over this. -
Raincoaster, want to report a fairly successful attempt at copying, deleting, then pasting my page “Anyone Can Quit Smoking” into the html editor and publishing as you suggested, then went to visual to format with bold, underlines, centering and headers, then saving .
In viewing the site (finished product), the spacing is not holding. It is bunching up again. So I repeated the spacing routine and saved again. While it is acceptable, It really isn’t what I wanted. I have to believe that I have done something wrong. (When I copied it, I did so from ‘smokinchoices’ site)

Well, if you copy from another site, you’re probably picking up extraneous tags as well; unless you use Wordpad or Notepad or some other way of stripping out tags, you are going to run into trouble sooner or later.
To get back to your spacing issue, check out this thread. I believe it has all the options that work now/have worked in the past:

Raincoaster – Major success! I am delighted with the spacing now. What a clever idea and really not too much trouble – it gave me what I wanted. I used the period on a line and with the kitchen sink open (the second line of icons), used #4 to select the white color of my page so that the period disappears. Thanks to you and Sacredpath, mtdewvirus staff and rosclarke. You are a much appreciated bunch – what a community!
