My pages are out of order–Help!

  • Unknown's avatar

I am currently importing all of my previous blog entries from myspace and blogger.

Unfortunately, I cannot use the Import tool for my blogger entries since blogger will not allow me to login due to their new and “improved” beta system. I have read every article I can find and contacted a blogger expert who told me that my problem is one only the blogger staff can fix. I decided to move my blog to wordpress because I’m tired of waiting for blogger to help me!

In the meantime, as I’m transferring my posts I noticed that my current posts are being put on page 4 while my older posts from myspace are on page 1. I would like to reverse the order and have no idea how to do that.

Does it have something to do with the time that I’m posting the entries at?

If you’d like to check it out to see what I’m talking about here it is: http://brackfamily.wordpress.com

    Thanks for any advice!

Not sure how you’re importing them. Maybe help if you explain that. Whatever you’re doing though is posting them for todays date and time. You can change this manually within each post. Click on the Edit Post link for this Post or from the Dashboard -> Manage -> Post page. You should see a Timestamp tab along the right hand side. That’s where you can edit that information.

Oh, do also not that I’ve changed your URL within your post. The ‘www’ bit takes the place of the ‘brackfamily’ bit. They can not coexist within the same URL. 30% of the net and most search engine spiders won’t follow such a link. It doesn’t make you look to good either for using it. I’ll go ahead and fix it within your post for you.

    Hope this helps,

Your blog will order the posts with the most recent one first. So even if it was an older post on your other system, it will be a new post if you created it last. One thing you could do is edit the post timestamp (on the right hand side when creating or editing a post). It allows you to put in the date that the post was originally created and just make sure that you click the ‘edit timestamp’ radio button!

That might be a good way to get them posted on the actual date you created them!

I’m just doing an old-fashioned copy and paste from my old blogs into wordpress.

I would love to just the import tool because it seems so much easier, but like I said, blogger will not allow me to access my blog right now.

Thanks for the timestamp tip. I guess that is what I’ll probably use to fix the order of my pages.

Oh, and thanks for the URL tip.

    Trent,
That is why I was confused. The most recent posts that I transferred are on page 4 and the posts I transferred earlier this afternoon are on page 1. *shrug*

Just looking over the timestamps of each entry you posted, it seems like they are all in decending order of time posted from newest to oldest. Just the posts you made, not the timestamps of your original entries. When posting the way you are, you have to start at the oldest entry and work your way towards today to have them listed in the right order with your blog here. Sorry if I am missing something!

BTW, I just wanted to say a huge thank-you for the promptness in answering my question. Blogger doesn’t have anything like this — makes me glad that I’m switching!

    Trent,
I’m probably the one missing something!

I went back and looked at my posts.

The first one titled “Bits and Pieces” is timestamped Feb. 22 at 10:20 pm
The last one on page 4 titled “You are my sunshine” is timestamped at 4:32pm

Shouldn’t it be the opposite way around with the 4:32 pm entry on page 1 and the 10:20 pm entry last on page 4????

I apologize if this is a ridiculous question, but I hope you can understand how much its bugging me! LOL

“When posting the way you are, you have to start at the oldest entry and work your way towards today to have them listed in the right order with your blog here.”

That’s exactly what I was trying to do. I started with the entries from April 2006 and I’m working my way ahead. Right now I’m in the process of transferring July 2006, but I stopped when I noticed the page order problem. I’d like to get that resolved before I continue.

Nope. The newest post would be the one closest to the current time. That means the one at 10:20 would be on the first page and the at at 4:30 would be on the forth page. WordPress has the newest entries (youngest for better way to word it) first and the older entries get pushed back. It works in chronological order.

Maybe I am confused! Let me double check! The July entries (page 1) would be the first ones listed then and the April entries would be before them (page 4 or whatever).

I gave up on this last night, but I’m back. *sorry*

I’ve gone back and looked at the time stamps and I don’t know what I can do to fix them.

When I go to “manage posts” and look at the listing of all my posts it starts with ID#40 at 22:20 (10:20) the list continues in descending order until #3 at 21:20.

Suddenly the list goes from #3 to #53 and the timestamp is 16:57. It continues to #43 at 16:34 (4:34)

When you click on my blog the page the pops up – page 1 – shows a post from 10:20 pm on Feb. 22.

When you go to the bottom and click on “next page” it continues for 4 more pages ends with a post from 4:34 pm on Feb. 22.

My problem is I want the post from 4:34 pm to be first.

    I am so confused.

Should I just start a new blog? I will if I absolutely have to, although it took me a long time to copy and paste my old entries to my new wordpress blog & the thought of doing it all over again makes me depressed.

So you want the oldest posts to be first? That is not the order that any posts that you make new will be in WordPress. It always has the newest first and the posts get older (in time) after that. If you started editing the timestamps to the actual date that you posted them, the order of the post ID will be in a different order in your MANAGE area of the admin.

If you were not moving the posts over to this new blog with cutting and pasting, it would show the first posts you created on your last page and the newest ones at the top of page 1. It is the chronilogical order that the posts are created in so that any new post you make is right there first for others to see!

If you were hoping to do them with the newest posts last (chronilogically), this is something that cannot be done with wordpress.com blogs. The best bet would be to go through all your posts that you have copied over and make them have the date that you actually posted them on so on the main page (and subsequent pages) would be like this:

    February 2007
    Newest post – Feb 21
    Next Post – Feb 20
    Last Post – Feb 2

    January 2007
    Newest post – Jan 31
    Next Post – Jan 18

    And so on until

    July 2006
    Newest Post – July 26th
    Oldest Post – July 4th.

They will be listed in the pages that way when you go through them with the Feb 21, 2007 post on the first page and the July 4th post 2006 being the oldest post and last on the list of the last page. Does that make sense? I could create the Feb 21st post with WordPress Post ID being #100 and then create the new July 4th, 2006 post with ID # 101 and still edit the timestamp back to the original date and have it in that position!

I hope this all makes sense and hope you have good luck Rebecca!

    My brain is going googly!

    I’m trying to grasp this!

I was copying and pasting the entries in the order I wanted them to appear. OLDEST=LAST —- NEWEST=FIRST. It seems like you are saying that is the way that WordPress organizes the posts which is why I’m confused. I don’t understand what happened. It seems like I was doing everything right.

I will try to go back and change the timestamp of each post to its original date. Hopefully that will fix the problem, if I understand your post correctly.

Thanks, Trent. Hope I’m not too much of a pain! LOL

  • Unknown's avatar

No pain at all Rebecca, as this isn’t really easy to conceptialize. The only other thing we could do if you like is work to get your old blogger export file into wordpress.com. That will take a couple of steps and work, but might an alternative if you would rather do that.

We could always try looking at this post by drmike and see if we can get the blogger posts to his site (free blog as well) and then back here. Might be worth a shot if you find yourself not liking the way things are going!

I was copying and pasting the entries in the order I wanted them to appear. OLDEST=LAST —- NEWEST=FIRST.

If you pasted the oldest ones last, they would then be the newest ones as far as wordpress is concerned, right? Which is why, it seems to me, your oldest posts show up on the main page.

I would DEFINITELY recommend changing the date/time stamps on your posts to reflect the original date/time stamps in your old blog. That should take care of the issue completely.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay….here it is….http://brackfamily.wordpress.com

As you can see I went through each individual post and changed the timestamp to reflect the ORIGINAL date that I posted the entry.

WordPress is putting the OLDEST entry 1st. I wanted the NEWEST entry to be the first entry on page 1.

You have to continue clicking next page until you finally arrive at page 4 to find the newest entry.

Why did it do that? I thought that by correcting the timestamp it would switch everything around.

Help! **sorry, I know anyone reading this is probably grimacing at the fact that I can’t seem to get it….believe me, I’m grimacing, too!**

    Thanks for any input,
    Rebecca

i just looked at your blog and… they’re in the right order for me. Try clearing your cache, etc and looking again. You have no posts between July 2006 and February 2007, is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

Rebecca I am seeing it the way it would look if you posted all those posts originally in wordpress.com the same as judyb12. I hope this is what you wanted because this is the way that wordpress would have ordered them. The Feb 22 post working back into time!
