my photographs are being replaced with low resolution copies?!
-
Yesterday I noticed the ‘welcome’ image at the top of my sidebar was suddenly displaying at a very low, ‘blocky’ resolution. Today, after making sure it wasn’t my browser, I went into my Media files, and to my horror, it was now a low resolution file there too! So I ‘redid’ it, re-posted it and went on with life. An hour later, my blog header also went all ‘blocky’ and low res!! What the heck is going on?!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

humblewoodcutter,
Your header looks fine to me. As does the “welcome” picture. (Safari)
I think something odd is going on, though. I just tried to upload a bunch of pictures (Firefox 3.0.6) and had to do them individually with the browser uploader or else they came up blank…
Your blog takes a long, long, long time to load. Even on my relatively high speed net access. Many people still have dial-up, so it’s a good idea to limit the number of posts per page.

Does it? I”m in Safari too. Looks horrible. I wonder why….
That’s good to know, thanks, it loads quickly on mine, but it’s very image intensive. I’ll go and do that.

@woodcutter, did you size and crop the image to the exact dimensions before uploading it? If not, then wordpress has to adjust the size before it allows you to crop it and it does not do a very good job with resizing and resampling.
I’m on Safari and Firefox in Mac as well and it actually looks quite good to me also.

Try the Full Size option when using the Insert Into Post tab.
WordPress will resize on-the-fly when you shrink an image down in your post, or when it needs to be smaller to fit the width of the theme. The original is still there.

Yes, I did size and crop the header exactly. I do use the full size, except when adding images to the sidebar.
The images aren’t just smaller, they are blocky – pixillated – as though they are trying to resolve, but never do.
I’ve had several people now tell me it looks fine, going back to see what I could have missed with my browser?
and thanks!

Hi, that’s the one I re-did and re-posted. The blog header is currently demonstrating this problem, at least on my machine! Am downloading Firefox to see if it’s a Safari issue, although it’s been fine up till now.

Ok, this is strange, but I think it’s the answer! I recently brought this iMac from the UK to Canada. When I first put a disk in the drive, it did this weird thing where it detected the geographic move and I needed to click something to make the disk run. I can’t remember the terms it used now. It was something like I needed to ‘flip’ the disk.
then everything screwed up.
I went into the disk utility and it told me to ‘repair permissions’
so without really understanding what that is :D I did it…. (gotta love Macs)
and now everything is displaying properly again.
Thanks for all the help though! I have no idea what was wrong or why it’s fixed, but hey.
