My photos have disappeared
-
I seem to have lost all but 3 of my images, and l’ve posted dozens of them. Where did they all go? They’re no longer in my media library and not in my posts anymore either. What happened? This totally messes up my site. Please help!

The blog I need help with is my other blog called Naked Nerves, not Gardening in Greenwood!

Hi there,
Your blog’s log shows that you deleted those images six months ago. I have also inspected your account and didn’t find any signs of ever being compromised.
-
I never deleted my media library. Why would I do that??? It doesn’t make any sense – it totally messes up my blog. Are you sure the system didn’t do it accidentally? That seems much more likely to me… Honestly – I didn’t do it!
-
Additionally – It takes 3 steps to delete one’s whole Media library. First you have to click on the drop down menu that says “bulk actions”. Then you have to select “delete permanently”. And finally you have to click on “apply”. There is No Way someone could do this accidentally. So either I had to do this intentionally, which I did not do, or the system did it. I really Did Not Do This! That can only mean that WordPress has (accidentally) lost my entire media library and is trying to blame it on me. Why??? Do you really mean to tell me that your system is 100% foolproof and never makes mistakes? I doubt that. I suppose all my photos are gone now aren’t they? I just lost 6 years of my work. Why would anyone do this intentionally?? You all could at least acknowledge that an error has occurred and offer me an apology. Thank you.

Our system did not automatically delete your images. If it did, the logs would have shown that. The logs show your username did it.
If you did not do it, then it was someone with access to a computer where you were logged into your account, or someone who already knew your password.
There is no way to recover those deleted files.

Thanks for your response. I respect your opinion very much, but I’ve never heard of a huge worldwide computer system that never had an occasional glitch. It’s in the news almost every day. Are you guys really the one exception?
Since I didn’t do it, as I explained in detail, and no one else has ever had access to my password (except WordPress) or my computer, then someone at WordPress accidentally did it, or your system failed somehow. It’s simple logic. I’d think you’d want to investigate all this more thoroughly. Unless you think I’m lying to you of course, which I doubt. (and I’m not). S*** happens! So, no offense meant, but please forgive me if I question this explanation.
Oh well. Thank you all very much for trying to help me, even if we disagree on the conclusions. I do appreciate all your efforts. I’m very sad, and I’m frustrated and angry, but I bear no ill will towards anyone. I’ll get over it… eventually. :) In peace, Steve

@steven1111 glitches can certainly happen, however if the system had done it, it wouldn’t show your username as having deleted the images. If things are deleted by staff or even by a “default user” that ID would show instead of yours, and that’s assuming it would show in the logs at all.
I’m really sorry about your lost images; that’s got to be really frustrating. We are required to respect deletion requests though.
If you don’t have the original images, you may have some luck with the Wayback Machine at archive.org, though I really can’t guarantee success there either. Here’s hoping they have the images there! Good luck!

Thank you. It helps to know more about it all. It’s still true that I didn’t do it, so I’m at a loss as to what happened. It sounds to me like you are too – tho you say it’s my log in ID, so you think it’s me. And yet I didn’t do it and I don’t know who did. So you really don’t know either. Yes, it is very frustrating. Oh well… I guess we’ll never really know.
I really appreciate your empathy and good wishes. That makes a huge difference to an intensely sensitive person like me. (My blog is called “NakedNerves” after all…) You’re the first one who has offered me that, and I could’ve used it sooner. All I heard was that it was my “fault”, despite my protestations of innocence. I lost years of probably irreplaceable creative work, and I’m grieving its loss. Why would I do this to myself?? A simple “Sorry for your loss”, would’ve been nice to hear much earlier… (Don’t they teach this stuff in customer service school?? ;-)
OK, this has taken way too much of everybody’s time and energy for far too long, especially mine. So Thanks to everyone for your help and my best to you all. I’m done. Steve

A final note: Thank you so much for suggesting the Wayback Machine at Archive.org. They actually have most of my photos there. So I’m gradually putting them back into my posts, tho now it seems some of my posts have also disappeared. Weirder and weirder… Ah well.. All is not lost! Thanks again!! Steve
