My pictures disappeared from one of my pages

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve just spent *days* working on my site, and now I’m suddenly getting “404 — File not found” errors on almost all of my pictures. To the best of my knowledge, I didn’t delete them from my picture storage area. I’m totally traumatized right now. The site I need help on is https://whimsiesbytamsen.wordpress.com/elemental-things/ – can you help me please? Thank you very much.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Notice the URLs of those images: they’re hosted on a different website. If that site got set to Private or deleted, teh images go Poof.

I’m not sure I understand (I’m not very experienced at this website business). I uploaded the pictures from my hard drive, not from my old website. Or at least, I *thought* so…

The pictures were showing up on that WordPress page for the first couple of days and then they suddenly went away today. Pictures still seem to be showing up on my other WordPress pages. They came from the same place as the others. So, I’m really confused…

Thank you for taking the time to check it out and offer a suggestion.

The URL of your blog is https://whimsiesbytamsen.wordpress.com/ but the URL of the site those images are hosted on is https://whimsiesmasks.wordpress.com/. You uploaded them there.

Did you change the name of the site since you started it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, actually, I *did* change the name from WhimsiesMasks to Whimsiesbytamsen – but I didn’t delete any pictures from either site address. The old address didn’t go private, or get deleted, as far as I know.

I surmised that I could change the name of the site, and that everything I had put on it would still be there. I didn’t realize it would be creating a new, *separate* site. I thought it would be all the same content, just a different name on the URL. Mea culpa, I guess.

In any case, what would be my next step to get my pictures back up onto the site that has the new name (whimsiesbytamsen.wordpress.com)? Because I would actually *like* to delete the old site address (whimsiesmasks.wordpress.com) at some point. Do I just have to suck it up and reload *everything* onto the site with the new name? Or is there an easier fix? Thank you very much!

I just went in and manually reloaded the 128 pictures that had the wrong URLs. I thank you for your feedback.

This is apparently a bug in the Change URL feature, so I flagged this for staff attention.

Yet another reason I never ever recommend doing this. Sorry to hear you had to upload all those pictures.

<Smiles> Not as sorry as I was! Thank you for flagging the topic for official attention. Hopefully they’ll get this fixed soon.

    Hi there,

It was not a bug in the change URL feature, but instead Tamsen, you created a new blog rather than renaming it.

This isn’t a huge problem other than the images problem which you have already fixed. You will need to make sure which site you are posting to and uploading your media files to, but other than that you should be fine.

If you’d like, you can also set your unused site to Private: http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

I don’t know how that happened. I followed the instructions I found on line, to change the URL. I specifically did *not* want to create a new blog. Oops, I guess.

The old, unused site (whimsiesmasks.wordpress.com) has now been set to private; however, I’d really like to delete it entirely. Right now, it has no posts and no pages on it. As far as I can tell, all of my pictures are now on the new site. So, theoretically, deleting the old site shouldn’t pose any problems, right?

    Thank you for your feedback.

You’re right, it theoretically should not pose any problems, but first I would go through your entire new site and hover over each photo. You’ll notice that at the bottom of your browser it will show a link. Make absolutely sure that all of your photos link to your new site rather than your old one.

Once you’re SURE that all of your photos are pulling from your new site rather than the old one, you can follow these directions to delete your old site:

    Delete a Website

But make absolutely sure you’re deleting the right one, since deletions are permanent in our system! I’d hate for you to delete the wrong one.
