My posts are appearing twice
-
Why would posts I set to appear at the top of my blog also be reappearing further down the blogging order? There are quite a few that are beginning to reappear like this. It is quite frustrating. Thank you for your help. — Margaret Sefton

Hi Margaret,
Each of the posts marked “Featured” on the Chateau theme is a sticky post, and sticky posts will appear twice in the blog stream. There are a lot of them on your homepage. Ordinarily, it is recommended that only one or two posts are marked sticky if this feature is used. You may “unsticky” a post by unchecking the box labeled “Stick to the top of the blog” in the post settings of the corresponding post editor, and saving the change.

Sorry, I forgot to link to the relevant support page. See the Sticky Posts section of the Post & Page Visibility support page. The image in that section highlights the “Stick to the top of the blog” box.

Just to add to what @musicdoc1 mentioned, can you share with us a couple of Post titles that you see duplicated on your site’s homepage so we can look. I scrolled quite a bit and didn’t see any duplication (but there were a lot of posts so I might have missed it) and to my understanding, sticky posts should only appear once on the Posts page.
It also seems like every post since this one https://brokenwriterblog.wordpress.com/2021/09/15/inktober-tranquil/ is a “Featured” post. Are you possibly copying a post that has “stick post to the top of the blog” already ticked in the Editor’s Publish module?
Also, can you let us know the reason why you want to add so many sticky posts? Perhaps we can suggest something different.

It seems you’re correct on that, although I only tested (after reading your comment) on the Chateau theme. I haven’t really used sticky posts much for years, but I recall for years being annoyed by the fact that a sticky post would ALWAYS end up being shown again on page 2 or page 5 of the blog page. Was this behavior universally changed at some point recently? There may be an option at Customize on some newer themes, but that isn’t the case on Chateau.
Anyway, that’s the behavior I’d expected, and I thought it might explain the behavior reported by @inaforestdark (great username!) in the OP. I hadn’t seen any duplicate posts on her homepage, so I took her word on that. I’m aware that her site has Infinite Scroll enabled, but I didn’t try that option on the test site because I’d guessed that at some point she’d had a posts per page setting applied.

Hi doc,
Was this behavior universally changed at some point recently?
No idea. AFAIK making a post sticky has always made that specific post appear at the beginning of the Posts page. I’m not aware of the repetition issue you describe, perhaps because I’ve only had one or two posts at a time marked as sticky on my sites.
There may be an option at Customize on some newer themes, but that isn’t the case on Chateau.
I don’t think I understand. Do you mean setting a specific tag as “featured”?
In the case of Chateau, making a post sticky marks it “Featured”.

No. I was just leaving open the possibility that WordPress.com had added a checkbox option as to whether a sticky post appears twice: once at the top of the blog stream and once within the stream at its chronologically appropriate place.Though I can’t precisely date when this occurred, I recall that sticky posts would, at some time in the murky past, show both at the top of the blog page and within the stream at the chronologically appropriate place.
I also clearly recall cases, perhaps only on certain themes, where a sticky post would display at the top of every page in a paginated blog stream (that is, one with a posts per page setting).
