My posts still don't show up in the reader

  • Unknown's avatar

My posts don’t show up in the reader. Thanks to advice I found here, I edited my posts to keep the number of keywords/categories below the limit.

That was over a month ago, but still no sign of any of my posts when I enter relevant keywords in the reader.

I have tried other fixes, but nothing seems to help. Could someone please help me with this? I post daily and feel like I’m really missing out on a chance to gain a wider audience because of this.

    Thank you!

Not every post is guaranteed to display in the Reader. Can you please give it a little more time and also consider trying some of the advice in this link?

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.

I’m glad you mentioned that link, actually I have read it more than once and would recommend the advice there to others who are reading this thread.

I paid for clicks with StumbleUpon and they provide a great service. I also made sharing buttons more visible. The best tweak so far was to post to Tumblr, and my readership has quickly grown due to that. I highly recommend that!

As far as the reader goes though, I do understand that not every post is guaranteed to show up in the reader, and I don’t have that expectation at all.

I’ve been posting pretty much every day since October of last year and I have yet to see my posts in the reader, while others in my category seem to get constant exposure there.

Because of this seeming disparity, and because of comments in past threads like this that I have read, there are often technical reasons for this issue, settings that needed to be changed, etc.

Since I have been through that on my own and nothing has changed so far, I thought I’d better ask someone here, as something seems to be standing in the way of seeing any of my posts in the reader at all.

I made a small change to your blog settings. Please give it a little time and then check it again.

Still no sign of any of my posts in the reader and I post just about every day. I really appreciate your tweak to my blog, but as of now, it still seems that I cannot get included in the reader.

Part of my frustration is not having a clue as to why I’m not included at all when others seem to be there over and over again.

Is there some editorial criteria that’s used that I’m not aware of?

Is there some editorial criteria that’s used that I’m not aware of?

These are the rules to check: http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/#missing-posts

I also tested two different keyphrases, “Kanji Kanban” and “Remembering the Kanji,” and they both showed up for me in the Reader in my tests.

Here are some screenshots I took: http://cl.ly/QDgL for http://wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/kanji-kanban and http://cl.ly/QENT for http://wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/remembering-the-kanji

Maybe you’re not entering the right topics. The Reader is based on keywords, try entering the keywords you’ve used for your posts.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do all that. Now I’m a bit at a loss. Because yes, as you said, the searches you did prompted my posts to show up in the reader.

Unfortunately for me, those search terms you used are highly specific to my blog, especially ‘kanji kanban’ which is a phrase I’ve made to build a bit of branding. So anyone who uses that to search, be it with the reader or through google, will see my posts at the top of the list. These people invariably already know about my blog, that’s why they’re familiar with that term.

However, what I really want is for folks to find my blog through a more general search, when they’re not speficically looking for it. That’s why I hoped that searching for simply ‘kanji’ in the reader would bring it up, since that’s what my blog is really all about, kanji. Other blogs regularly come up for me when I search using this, or other things like ‘Japanese language’ or ‘hiragana’ or ‘katakana’ which are also alphabets used in Japan that I feature. But none of my posts ever come up with these common search terms in my niche, only the highly specific ones you tried.

This seems odd to me, I thought I might have been entirely excuded from the reader, but it seems I’m not, not wuite. But why am I not showing up in the type of searches I just mentioned? After all, ‘kanji’ as a search term is similar to the ‘kanji kanban’ you searched with. Why doesn’t it generate any of my posts?

Now I feel I must not be writing my posts cleverly enough, to get that to trigger something. But I use the words regularly and also use them as tags.

Thanks much for your time, it’s much appreciated!

    Hi there,

An important thing to note is that the Reader Topics section displays posts based on the exact categories and tags you put on your posts. For example, your latest post appears when you search for “learn kanji”:

    http://wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/learn-kanji

But it won’t appear when you search for “kanji” unless you use that specific tag on the post. I hope this helps!

You paid for clicks? That could be the problem.
