My posts won't post

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I’ve tried to post 3 posts tonight and had trouble with all of them. Regardless of whether I select to post immediately, it schedules the posts. Through a mixture of clearing cookies and cache, looking at other themes and generally looking at all the settings, somehow the first two posts posted. I’ve tried the same with the last one but it’s still scheduled.
The very first post I did a few days ago worked fine first time.
Please can you give me really basic instructions as I’m new to the site and I’m not too sure how it works and what things are called. I also don’t don’t want to mess up what I’ve done so far as I’m fairly happy with it for now and if I start clicking on things, I may not figure out how to get it back.
Also, is it possible to set my location and post immediately as default?
    Thanks

  • Hi there. First, I’m going to give you the link to the WP-Admin dashboard: http://browniesetcetera.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

I suggest you bookmark that link, as many settings are only available on that page and not on the My Sites page you reach from the Reader. You can also reach the WP-Admin dashboard via the link with the same name on the My Sites page.

Scheduled posts aren’t actually published on the moment they’ve been scheduled for, but only the first time someone views your blog after that time. If you don’t have many followers yet, that might mean it’s taking a bit longer for those posts to be triggered. In such a case, log out of your account and view your own blog. That should trigger the post. See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/schedule-a-post/

FWIW, I just viewed your site and I see four posts, three of them published on 19 July, so from my end it looks like all three newest posts were published.

Otherwise, in the WP-Admin dashboard, click on Settings ->General. Please make sure that your timezone settings are correct there. I’ve seen in the past that people had problems with post scheduling if their timezone settings were wrong: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/general-settings/2/#timezone

Then there are two editors. Via the My Sites page or the New Post button in the admin bar you get taken to what’s known as the New Editor (says Beep Beep Boop while loading). I assume that’s what you’ve been using. The New Editor has had bugs with post scheduling in the past. Those are supposed to be fixed, but just in case, please check if you have the same problem when using the classic editor. You find the classic editor by going to the WP-Admin dashboard and clicking on Posts ->Add New. This supports doc explains using the classic editor: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/

If you’ve been using the mobile app to create posts, then the problem is most likely connected to the timezone, as the mobile app only has the one editor.

To make changes to existing posts (published, scheduled and draft), go to the WP-Admin dashboard and click on Posts ->All Posts. This support doc explains the various options on that screen: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/ There’s also an equivalent screen for pages that works exactly the same.

As far as I know, there’s no way to save your location, as your browser or phone determines that info on a post-by-post basis when you click the Add Location button. You can read exactly how that feature works here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/geotagging/

If you haven’t yet, I suggest you work through one of the tutorials. It will make things much easier very quickly:
    http://learn.wordpress.com/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/video-quick-start/

If you have any more questions, and if the advice I gave above does not resolve this problem, please let us know.

Thank you. Lots to look through there but I didn’t even realise that views trigger posts. I’ll work through all this and see what happens.
    :)

Ah, just signed out to view my blog and the post has published, thank you! I’ve wasted a lot of time on this over the last few days. Time for that tutorial I think!

  • Once you have some followers and once your blog is getting indexed by search engines this shouldn’t be a problem anymore, as normal traffic will trigger those posts. But until then, you know what to do.

    Glad I could help :)
