My Primary Domain Shows an Error 404 Message when I Enter the URL

    Hi There,

I’m trying to map an existing domain to my WordPress blog. I’ve selected it as my Primary Domain, I’ve updated the Name Servers at my registrar and I’ve cleared the cache. However, when I enter the domain name in the address bar, I get and Error 404 Message. Even from the WordPress dashboard, when I try to view my first post, I get the error message:

    “The requested URL /2015/02/13/fals-new-digs/”

Any thoughts on a step I’ve missed? The domain name was purchased from GoDaddy and was previously mapped to Google Blogger. I have since reverted the Google blog back to blogspot as I want to use WordPress as my new blogging platform.

If this helps: from the Domain Management Screen in WordPress, the first 3 DNS records show as being handled by WordPress but the CNAME is greyed out. Is this part of the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey there!

When I visit http://fakingaliving.com/, I am taken to your WordPress.com site.

If I click on the title of the first post in your blog, that post opens up.

Could you tell me what URL you’re using, so I can investigate further?

    Thanks very much!

    Hi,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I use either http://www.fakingaliving.com or the naked address fakingaliving.com. The site has been in and out all day with both (although the Internet connection has been fine so it’s not that). Sometimes it comes up with no problem, sometimes I get the error message.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey there!

It appears as if you just mapped your domain today. I checked your domain settings, and everything is setup and saved properly. It can take up to 72-hours for the adjustments to your DNS to take effect internet-wide. I suspect that’s why you’re experiencing the instability. Let’s give it a bit of time.

Could you please stay in touch with me and let me know how things are working on Monday?

In the meantime, you may also want to clear the old data in your browser by clearing Chrome’s cache. Antiquated data can impact the way you’re able to view websites.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

    Hi Again,

Well, everything has been fine since late Saturday – no error messages or problems getting to the site so it appears to have worked itself out and all the adjustments have taken place. Thank you again for your help and assistance!
